SUMMARY

The Assistant Professor, RFA will conduct translational studies in Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology supporting its the mission and goals.

Scientific contributions must impact cancer research efforts throughout the institution. This faculty member must perform within the context of an environment that emphasizes collegial and collaborative approaches, and that will lead to the development of an independent research career for themselves.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Administrative (1%)

Participate in departmental, divisional, institutional meetings, grand rounds, faculty retreats, seminars, and initiatives that align with strategic priorities.

This may include traveling to meeting(s), listening to meeting deliberations, and reporting meeting outcomes in an appropriate manner using electronic or written communication.

  • Serve on committees as assigned or requested by Department Chair or faculty mentor member. In addition, provide verbal feedback and didactic information exchange regarding meeting progress and outcomes.
  • Complete institutional required or leadership development trainings.
  • Assume administrative duties as assigned by Department Chair or faculty mentor member.

Research (97%)

Establish and maintain a translational research program in the department under the mentorship of a senior faculty member.

This requires ongoing publications in peer review journals, development and submission of investigator-initiated grant proposals, and scholarly presentations.

Excellent oral and written skills as well as the ability to synthesize information pertaining to the area of research are required.

May be required to provide supervision and training to research support personnel in implementation of the research. Be interactive and willing to participate in collaborative studies within and outside the department.

Participate in scientific meetings, divisional and departmental seminars / Grand Rounds and other research related activities as necessary to present results of experiments and make ready results for publications of manuscripts / abstracts.

In addition, must prepare for publication in peer review scientific journals. Presents journal clubs, seminars, abstracts to different meetings and prepares posters for presentation.

Domestic and foreign travels are also essential.

  • Prepare and submit applications for peer-review funding to a wide variety of funding agencies.
  • Require maintaining meticulous record of experimental records of data and protocols. Provide necessary preliminary data to clinicians for peer reviewed grant applications.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of fundamental concepts by either reviews of the literature, attendance at seminars / meetings and / or course work.

Contribute to designated projects by proposing potential investigatory directions and alternative interpretation of data.

Must have well-developed interpersonal skills and be able to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with peers, senior faculty and subordinates.

Collaborate with a number of investigators to support multi-project grants. Collaborate with other faculty and work as a team and on multiple projects simultaneously.

Supervise the tissue collection and data collection infrastructure and repositories for gastric and esophageal cancer and their pre-malignancies.

Act as the administrator for the tissue collection project. Carry out elaborate translational studies in the provided laboratory space.

Systematically carry out experiments to uncover the molecular underpinnings of gastric and esophageal malignancies and premalignancies.

Work with clinicians to complete translational projects. Requires ability to prioritize work, and be able to decide on equipment required to carry on the experiments.

Also requires ability to deduce results from the experiments conducted, and to defend the results with the supervisor and peers.

Education (2%)

Present, participate, and attend educational activities, conferences, and meetings, which require verbal interaction with colleagues throughout the hospital, campus, and other institutions.

This includes division and departmental seminars, departmental seminars featuring trainee presentations and program retreats.

  • Serve as a mentor and provide stimulating educational experience for graduate, postdoctoral and other trainees in the department.
  • Serve in an exemplary manner as a role model to colleagues, students, and support staff. Mentor and train junior colleagues.

Extramural Service

  • Visually review, understand, synthesize, interpolate, summarize or provide editorial commentary on manuscripts, grant applications, research literature, or professional communications, verbally or by use of electronic and manual methods.
  • Disseminate research findings, thought posters, talks and associated abstracts, at national scientific meetings.

EDUCATION

Required : Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission.

Preferred : PhD, MD or equivalent degree in in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission.

EXPERIENCE

Required : At least two (2) years as postdoctoral fellow or Instructor, required or equivalent time as a basic scientist.

Preferred : Must have experience working in a research environment where duties involve scientific research disciplines, at a component or at another academic institution, or have applicable experience deemed equivalent.

Has evidence of consistent research of high quality, ability to carry out individual collaborative research and support, and a dedication to a career in cancer research is required.

LICENSURE Not applicable

This position has a target base salary of $ 80,000 to $ 100,000 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.
