keeps the right of way free of hazards; paves the roads; repairs bridges and public stairways; expands accessibility; and works at the forefront addressing some of San Francisco’s biggest challenges.

The Bureau of Street Environmental Services keeps the City’s streets, sidewalks, and other public spaces clean with mechanical and manual sweeping, graffiti abatement, and power washing.

The 24 / 7 operation runs specialized operations, including the Hot Spots teams that focus on encampment cleanups, CleanCorridorsSF, which provides a weekly deep cleaning to neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping runs in the most impacted areas.

The team also supports volunteer programs to advance San Francisco’s cleaning and greening initiatives.

Appointment Type : Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

The duration of the appointment is expected to be 12 months.

Under general supervision, as a Public Service Aide, you will clean and maintain the merchant corridors under the Corridor Ambassador Program.

Important and Essential Duties :

As a Public Service Aide, your duties may include but are not limited to the following :

  • Clean curb catch basins and areas between cars.
  • Sweep tree basins and remove any debris.
  • Fill bags with trash, leave enough room so you can tie the bag, and leave in common pick up area.
  • Report any deficiencies that are beyond your tool or your capability.
  • Remove graffiti and tags and scrape off stickers on public properties including street poles, garbage cans, utility boxes, benches, mailboxes, fire hydrants (but not the top), and parking meter poles.
  • Sweep and remove debris from public areas including sidewalks, curbside, plazas, stairways, building frontages, and other areas of public path of travel.
  • Remove illegal postings as needed on assigned route.
  • Weed as needed from sidewalks, tree basins, and gutters.

Desirable Qualifications :

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and / or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

Selection Procedures :

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates.

If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will move forward in the recruitment process.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through all of the steps in the selection procedure.

Drug Testing Requirement :

Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by the Laborers, Local 261, are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident.

Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive positions for six months after the date of the positive test.

Medical Examination :

Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine their ability to perform the essential functions and / or meet physical requirements.
