Job Description and Duties
The Pharmacy Technician will be directed by the Pharmacist I, Pharmacist II and / or Pharmacy Services Manager in the Pharmacy at the Department of State Hospitals Atascadero (ASH).
The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to :
- Follow pharmacy and nursing policy / procedures and Administrative Directives regarding medication processes atASH.
- Fill Unit Dose patient containers.
- Fill Automated Dispensing Devices throughout the hospital.
- Maintain repackaging machine.
- Restock repackaging machine.
- Pre-pack medication tablets / capsules for the unit dose & / or Automated Dispensing Devices.
- Fax validated physician medication orders to the appropriate units.
- Filing documentation.
- Restock unit emergency kits.
- Interface with units regarding unit dose processes and Automated Dispensing Devices.
- Assist pharmacists by filling prescriptions for discharge patients.
- Accurately read and interpret physician’s orders.
- Work directly with pharmacists to ensure accuracy of data collection, interpretation, and input of physician orders.
- Interface with unit regarding physician orders scheduling, distribution of automated orders and Medication Administration Records.
- Interface with unit staff for retrieval of copies of physicians’ orders.
- Process patient medication transfer orders.
- Knowledge of medical terms, abbreviations, medications (Brand, generics, dosage forms, and strength).
- Purchase from prime vendor and individual vendors.
- Solve purchasing problems.
- Stock shelves, rotate stock, check for outdates.
- Participate in medication room inspections.
- Update shelves with prime vendor stickers.
In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements :
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE : Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at , OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE : Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE : Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Pharmacy Technician issued by the State Board of Pharmacy set forth in Section 4115 and 4202 of the Business and Professions Code.
Registration requirements shall not apply during the first year of employment for a person employed or utilized as a Pharmacy Technician to assist in the filling of prescriptions for a person receiving treatment in a facility operated by the State Departments of Mental Health or Developmental Services.
AND Either I : One year of clerical work experience in a pharmacy relieving a pharmacist of clerical or subprofessional duties.
Primary duties must have included stocking shelves with pharmaceutical supplies or typing pharmaceutical labels. Experience in the California state service applied toward this requirement must be in a class at a level of responsibility not less than that of Office Assistant (General), Range B.
Academic education above the 12th grade may be substituted for the experience on the basis of one year of education of a science or mathematical nature being equivalent to six months' experience.
Students who are enrolled in the last semester or its equivalent of course work which upon completion will fulfill these requirements will be admitted to the examination, but they must submit evidence of completion before they can be considered for appointment.
OR II : Completion of an academic curriculum and formal on-the-job training program for Pharmacy Technician.
If it is determined that an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, the applicant’s name may be removed from the eligibility list.
