The Senior Vice President (SVP) / Vice Dean (VD) for Faculty Affairs at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) and Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) provides leadership and operational oversight supporting faculty processes, policies, procedures, advancement and professionalism for VP&S and CUIMC, working closely with the leadership of the four CUIMC health science schools.

In the role of the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs at VP&S, she / he is responsible for all facets of faculty development, promotion and professionalism at VP&S, reporting to the Dean of VP&S and working closely with the VP&S Department Chairs.

She / he will oversee diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) activities for faculty, working closely with DEIB leads for staff and students.

In addition, he / she oversees faculty governance on behalf of the Dean, through the Faculty Council. The Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs reports to the Dean of VP&S.

In the role of SVP at CUIMC, she / he is responsible for faculty affairs across the four health science schools : the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, the College of Dental Medicine, and the School of Nursing.

This role includes the development, management and oversight of all faculty appointment, promotion and tenure processes, faculty professional development, compliance and trainings including conflict of interest, and management of professionalism related processes.

In addition, she / he oversees the operations of the International Students and Scholars Office for CUIMC in collaboration with the Office of the Provost.

The SVP for Faculty Affairs reports to the CEO of CUIMC.

This is a pivotal time for VP&S and CUIMC as the organization emerges from the pandemic while navigating new challenges and redoubling efforts to advance collective impact.

With the arrival of a new Columbia University President and Provost, the SVP / VD will play a key role in the broader university vision for faculty advancement and academic excellence as well as campus culture and wellbeing.

Faculty Affairs

  • Oversee faculty appointment processes, including hiring, onboarding, and leaves and separations.
  • Lead development and implementation of strategic and operating plans of Faculty Affairs in coordination with partners including departments, leadership from NYP, NYSPI, ColumbiaDoctors, General Counsel, and the Provost’s Office.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to faculty affairs, ensuring compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Develop processes for annual review of faculty performance to be implemented across VP&S. Serve as a resource and advisor to faculty members, medical center leadership and liaison with the Office of the Provost on matters related to faculty policies, professional standards, and ethical conduct.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel and human resources to address faculty-related legal and compliance issues, including conflicts of interest, academic misconduct, and grievances.

Faculty Professional Development

  • Oversee the design and delivery of faculty development programs and resources to support the academic advancement of faculty.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to faculty members, supporting their professional growth and advancement within the academic ranks.
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and collaboration among faculty members through recognition programs, awards, and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Faculty Evaluation and Promotion

  • Oversee the Committees on Appointments and Promotion and their processes to ensure that promotion and tenure criteria are clearly defined, consistently applied, and aligned with national standards and institutional priorities.
  • Oversee a transparent and equitable faculty evaluation process, including annual performance reviews, promotion and tenure reviews, and salary reviews.
  • Support faculty members and departments in preparing promotion and tenure dossiers, providing guidance on evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarly contributions, and service to the institution and profession.

Faculty Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty members, advocating for the recruitment and retention of individuals from underrepresented groups.
  • Implement initiatives to enhance the diversity of the faculty pipeline, including targeted recruitment efforts, implicit bias training, and support for diverse career paths.
  • Work collaboratively with institutional leaders and diversity officers to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all faculty members.

Compliance

  • Oversee faculty adherence to university and school-wide compliance standards.
  • Oversee clear and transparent processes for adherence to faculty conflict of interest policies on education, clinical care and administration.
  • Work with research, education, and clinical leadership across departments, schools and the university to develop and implement processes and procedures for managing compliance issues.

Professionalism

  • Oversee the CUIMC Office of ProfessionalismWork with CUIMC HR leadership, the FPO, the Equity Office of Affirmative Action (EOAA), the Ombuds Office, CUIMC School Deans, leadership of NewYork-Presbyterian, Public Safety, and others to implement processes to address issues of professionalism.
  • Work across departments and schools to promote the values associated with an organizational climate and culture of respect, support and excellence so that every member may thrive in their careers and personal lives.

International Students and Scholars

  • Oversee the CUIMC operations of the International Students and Scholars Office in collaboration with the Office of the Provost.
  • Serve as the CUIMC liaison to Homeland Security on immigration matters relevant to students, faculty and trainees.
  • Ensure federal immigration compliance and oversee immigration-related services to non-immigrant international students and scholars, faculty and staff throughout CUIMC who require assistance with their visa status in order to study or work at the Medical Center campus (approximately 1,400 international scholars, faculty and staff, and approximately 600 international students).

Strategic Planning and Institutional Leadership

  • Contribute to the implementation of strategic initiatives and goals for faculty affairs, aligning with the broader mission and vision of the medical school.
  • Represent faculty interests and concerns in institutional decision-making processes, advocating for resources and support to advance faculty development and success.
  • Collaborate with other academic leaders to foster interdisciplinary collaborations, promote academic innovation, and enhance the reputation and impact of the medical school.
  • A terminal degree in a relevant field (MD, PhD, or equivalent) with a distinguished record of academic achievement.
  • Proven academic physician leader with a minimum of ten years’ clinical practice and five years’ leadership of a clinically focused unit, program, or Department Track record of significant accomplishments in academic administration in a medical school or healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting, inspiring, and mentoring a diverse senior leadership team and providing direction to achieve best-in-class performance of the organization.
