We are seeking a seasoned Electrical Engineer to join our team at unspun. In this role, you will design, develop, test, and deploy electronic assemblies and electrical systems for our revolutionary Vega™ 3D weaving technology.

Your work will be crucial in refining, optimizing, and scaling the electrical components of our 3D weaving machines, with a strong focus on field deployment and reliability.

About unspun

unspun's mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by 1% by revolutionizing the way we make clothes. We envision a world where every garment is made on-demand, eliminating overproduction and reconnecting people with the clothing they wear.

We've recently secured Series B funding and are now scaling our proven Vega™ 3D weaving technology. Our focus is on transforming this innovative concept into a global manufacturing reality, and we need your expertise to make it happen.

About You

You're an experienced problem-solver with a passion for bringing innovative products to market. You thrive in a fast-paced, startup environment and are excited about the challenge of applying your electrical engineering skills to revolutionize the fashion industry.

You're adaptable, detail-oriented, and eager to establish processes and structures in a growing startup.

What You'll Do

As our first Electrical Engineer, your core responsibility will be to refine, optimize, and deploy the electrical systems that power our Vega™ 3D weaving machines.

You will work across multiple teams, with emphasis on firmware and mechanical engineering, to realize the world's first 3D woven products on the market.

Your key responsibilities include :

  • Designing and developing electronic assemblies, including PCB design and sensor integration, ensuring functionality, testability, reliability, and compliance with industry standards
  • Developing and executing comprehensive test plans to improve machine reliability and reduce field failure rates
  • Refining and optimizing current designs for manufacturability, with a focus on size constraints and reliability
  • Establishing and documenting processes for electrical assembly design, manufacturing, and quality assurance as we scale production
  • Collaborating closely with firmware and mechanical engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software
  • Conducting thorough testing, calibration, and failure analysis of electronic assemblies
  • Managing vendor relationships for component sourcing

Ideal Qualities

  • 5+ years of experience in electronic assembly design and testing, with a proven track record of deploying products in the field
  • Strong experience in PCB design principles and design for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Expertise in developing and executing comprehensive test plans
  • Knowledge of industrial machine electrical design, including experience with CAN, motors, and industrial power systems
  • Proficiency with wired and wireless communication, including test, analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with size-constrained designs and optimization
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a knack for hands-on debugging and prototyping
  • Ability to establish processes and documentation in a startup environment

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with wire harness design and ability to read wiring diagrams
  • Experience setting up electrical engineering labs / workshops
  • Knowledge of manual board bring-up processes
  • Understanding of sustainability practices in electronics design
  • Experience working with small to medium volume production (tens to hundreds of units)
  • Interest in fashion and apparel

We don't expect you to have all of the listed qualities. If you don't meet all the requirements but have a voracious passion for learning and are excited about our mission, we strongly encourage you to apply.

Benefits

The salary range for this role is 153,000 - $168,000 USD annually, plus equity benchmarked at 75th percentile.

Our Philosophy

We won’t roll our eyes if your socks don’t match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too.

Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions.

We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because that’s the way it’s always been done.

We’re a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We’re aspiring chess masters and climbers, bakers and photographers.

Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call the SF Bay Area home, with strong ties to Hong Kong.

We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.

unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience.

We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics.

Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
