2-3 sentences describing job purpose) : In order to Exceed Great Expectations, the academic potential for all learners must be identified, nurtured and maximized, a Gifted & Talented Teacher will be in every elementary and middle school.

The Gifted & Talented Teacher acts as a liaison between the Office of Gifted and Talented and MNPS schools in the implementation of academically differentiated instructional programs.

The Gifted & Talented Teacher coordinates screening and selection processes; provides content-based direct instruction that is advanced, differentiated, and appropriate for learners of varying levels and abilities in grades K-8.

Job Duty / Resp. 1 :

Recognizes the characteristics, including non-traditional characteristics, of gifted and highly able learners and adapts curriculum to meet their unique needs.

Job Duty / Resp. 2 :

Accelerates instruction in an evidence-supported way that meets the needs of gifted learners while ensuring a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and media are used.

Job Duty / Resp. 3 :

Provides content-based instruction that is advanced, differentiated, and appropriate for learners of varying levels and abilities.

Job Duty / Resp. 4 :

Promotes a growth mindset philosophy and works with teachers, principals, and families to find and nurture advanced academic potential in students from historically underrepresented populations.

Job Duty / Resp. 5 :

Facilitates the intellectual and professional development of teachers in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, facilitating professional learning opportunities.

Models effective teaching practices and instructional strategies in classrooms; designs and delivers professional development modules as needed (i.

e., differentiating instruction, critical reasoning, etc.).

Job Duty / Resp. 7 :

Coordinates screenings and assessments to determine a student’s eligibility for advanced academic services. Coordinates screening processes for rescreens and students new to the system;

uses pre- and post-assessments and observations to guide ongoing instruction, differentiation, grouping, and measuring student growth.

Analyzes student needs, including quantitative and qualitative data analysis for instructional decision making; assists school staff with understanding the instructional implications from assessments.

Job Duty / Resp. 8 :

Works with the community, parents and outside agencies to facilitate Advanced Academic Education awareness; reacts to change productively;

and, handles other tasks as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

Education (training / degree) : Required minimum : Bachelor’s degree in a content area from an accredited college or university required, coursework in gifted education;

Preferred : Masters’ degree.

Experience Requirements : Three (3) years’ teaching experience or proven expertise working with gifted and talented students.

Tennessee teaching certification for elementary and / or middle school.Meets Gifted Education requirements per the State of Tennessee by having either the Gifted Employment Standard or the Gifted Endorsement.

Additional Requirements :

  • Submission of 3 letters of reference from a supervisor, colleague, and teacher supporting the candidate’s teaching skills as well as human relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Admission to the Metro Nashville Public Schools K-8 Gifted and Talented Teacher Pool.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of tools, especially instructional technology, to enhance

and extend instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS :

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

  • Three (3) years of highly successful teaching experience or proven expertise working with advanced learners;
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to gifted identification, programs and services, talent development, and Growth Mindset
  • Knowledge of recent research and best practices in Gifted education including the non-traditional characteristics and masks of gifted and highly able students as well as equity and access;
  • Has a variety of content area expertise;
  • Evidence of effective leadership skills;
  • Excellent human relations skills;relates positively with teachers, administrators and other central office personnel; Interacts effectively with students and parents;
  • Demonstrated competency in adult learning theory and developing and leading professional learning opportunities for instructional staff and parents; and,
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; possesses excellent public speaking abilities.

Physical Demands :

Level 6 : Requires medium work involving standing or walking all of the time, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis, and considerable dexterity and skill in operating machinery and tools.

Sensory Requirements :
