Summary :

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providingmedical or surgical services to patients; collecting anddocumenting date, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures;

ordering and scheduling necessary studies and professionalconsultations; and providing direct patient care services toinclude prescribing medications and other therapies asneeded.

Responsibilities :

• When collaborating with other health care providers, theadvanced practice nurse shall be accountable for knowledge of thestatutes and rules relating to advance practice nursing andfunction within the boundaries of the appropriate advanced practicecategory
• The APN shall practice within the advancedspecialty and role appropriate to his / her advanced educationalpreparation
• The APN acts independently and / or incollaboration with the health team in the observation, assessment,diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care, counseland health teachings of persons who are ill, injured or informed ofexperiencing changes in normal health processes, and in thepromotion and maintenance of health or prevention of illness
• When providing medical aspects of care, APNs shall utilizemechanisms which provide authority for that care
• These mechanisms may include, but are not limited to, protocols orother written authorization
• Assess and manage patienthealth problems including actual and potential conditions withinthe hospital, clinic or outpatient setting
• Effectively identify, evaluate and address diseaseprevention / health promotion issues of the population in practicewhile administering quality patient care
• Responsiblefor the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic and long-termhealthcare issues
• Plan, implement and evaluate healthcare treatments
• Obtain history and physicalexaminations on patients of all appropriate age groups per scope ofpractice
• Assess and interpret laboratory andradiological findings
• Utilize critical thinkingskills to individualize patient care in order to manage illnesses,promote wellbeing, and foster rehabilitative / disease preventivelifestyle choices
• Prescribe medications andsupportive therapies to help maintain health
• Performadvanced procedures as verified and approved per credentialingcommittee
• Educate patients and / or families aboutpreventive care, medical issues and use of prescribed medicaltreatments and / or medications
• Work in an independentand interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff,which allows for consultation, collaboration and / or referral
• Synthesize new knowledge gained from conferences, workshopsand professional literature
• Teach other healthcareprofessionals in the classroom, clinical area and / or communityabout practice, techniques and procedures which are unique to thatspecific clinical setting
• Participate in basicscience and clinical research projects
• Preparestatistical reports and analyses to document progress, adversetrends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions
• Maintain legible, accurate and confidential medical records
• This includes documenting all medical evaluationsdiagnosis, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referralsand consultations consistent with governing boards such as NCQA(National Committee for Quality Assurance), JCAHO (Joint Commissionon Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations), federal and stateregulatory standards

Requirements :

• Master of Science inNursing
• 2 -3 years of experiencepreferred
• APRN License in state ofemployment
• RN License in state of employment orcompact
