The Physician Assistant (PA) provides medical care to patients within a detailed scope of practice.
Essential Functions :
- Reviews prior health history, work history, history of physical complaints, and results of prior diagnostic studies, social history, and other relevant information.
- Takes relevant medical history and performs physical examinations.
- Performs injections and other procedures as per licensure.
- Orders appropriate and pertinent diagnostic studies according to standards of care.
- Develops a plan of care. Including discharge plans and follow-up care.
- Collaborates and refers questions to other health team members.
- Consults with collaborating physician, as needed.
- Documents evaluations, treatments and clinical procedures in the EMR system.
- Provides appropriate information and educational materials to patients and family members.
- Refers patient to physician or other appropriate provider for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment, as appropriate and necessary.
- Provides guidance and counseling to patients and families concerning problems related to injury or total health care.
- Apprises patients and families of changes in medical condition, treatment and health care plan, as needed.
- Assists in identifying available internal and external community resources and makes arrangements for referrals, as needed.
- Enhances professional development through participation in educational programs, current literature review, and in-service meetings and incorporates principals into personal practice.
- Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education : Master’s in PA studies from an accredited University.
Experience : Orthopedic experience preferred but new graduates are welcome.
Requirements : Current state PA license, certified by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Current CPR certification.
Knowledge :
- Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols, administration of medications, delivering physical care following treatment plan.
- Knowledge of how to assess patient health and measure / record physiologic and growth indices.
- Knowledge of health promotion principles and techniques and patient learning measurement.
Skills :
- Skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic and emotional patient data.
- Skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention or referral.
- Skill in evaluating and revising care plan based on patient changes.
- Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, discretion and decision-making to achieve medical objectives.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with vendors, internal staff, Doctors and Management.
Abilities :
- Ability to make responsible decision within the scope of a dependent medical practitioner.
- Ability to develop health education programs and materials.
- Ability to communicate information effectively with patients, medical staff, and others.
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
Physical / Mental Demands :
Standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping and twisting. Requires ability to help transfer patients. Occasional stress from dealing with multiple tasks and tense patients.
Requires full range of motion, manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination.
Environmental / Working Conditions :
Work is performed in a clinical environment. Involves frequent contact with staff and the public. Work may be stressful at times.
Occasional weekend or evening work required.
Physical Requirements :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and / or stand for prolonged periods, work longer than eight (8) hour shifts, and to work both day / evening shifts.
Work may hand dexterity as well as the need to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 lbs.
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
