WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Senior Attorney will provide legal services on complex matters to advance organization-wide priorities and appropriately manage risk for assigned programs.
They ensure that transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with our mission, authority, policies, and procedures.
They will be responsible for providing legal advice and support regarding matters relating to all aspects of The Nature Conservancy’s programs for assigned business units within the eastern United States.
These matters include conservation real estate matters such as purchases and sales of fee interests and conservation easements, licenses, and leases.
The Senior Attorney will also provide advice on non-real estate conservation projects, contracts, and grants as well as advice regarding intellectual property.
The Senior Attorney will be responsible for interpreting and administering the organization’s corporate policies and procedures as they apply to our work.
The Senior attorney will have strong oral and written communication skills and a willingness to learn non-profit law. They will work as part of a team of attorneys, paralegals and support staff and will report to the Associate General Counsel responsible for the New York and Northeast Division States.

Come join TNC’s growing legal team to support TNC conservationists and scientists doing cutting edge projects in the Northeast and New York such as
the protection of the 15,000 acre Follensby Pond property by 2 distinct conservation easements ; support for work with indigenous partners including assistance grants, preserve access agreements and land transfers;
cutting edge impact investing to advance conservation; support for forest, freshwater and marine / coastal conservation programs and for urban conservation programs, and review of multi-million dollar state and federal government grants.
The Senior Attorney is responsible for providing legal support for all aspects of the Conservancy’s programs and may support business units beyond New York and the Northeast.
This position may have supervisory responsibility for paralegals and may be asked to supervise other attorneys. This position is supervised by a Senior Attorney.
The position will be hybrid, based in the Albany, New York office.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Juris Doctorate or equivalent and license to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
Five (5) years relevant legal experience or at least three (3) years relevant legal experience coupled with assumption of significant responsibilities for a geographic area or subject matter expertise.
Experience advising clients on evaluating and managing risk.
Experience in real estate law and legal issues relating to land management, including acquisitions, title review, leases, conservation easements, encroachments, restoration, and coordination with public agencies.
Experience in negotiating, drafting and reviewing contracts and / or government grants.
Legal research and writing experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in non-profit law and intellectual property.
In-house experience and / or law firm experience advising sophisticated clients and senior management.
Experience developing, directing, and managing multiple projects.

SALARY INFORMATION
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $118,000 - $128,000 for annual base salary.
This range only applies to candidates whose location of employment is Albany, New York, USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
