Summary :

The competent Nurse, in the same or similar clinicalsetting, practices independently and demonstrates an awareness ofall relevant aspects of a situation.

Provides routine and complexcare, with the ability to on long-range goals or plans. Continuesto develop the ability to cope with and manage contingencies ofclinical nursing.

Makes appropriate assignments and delegates toother care providers as a means to help manage the clinicalsituation.

The CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital,established in 1959, was the first children’s hospital inSouth-Central Texas. Located downtown, this 190-plus-bed hospitalserves more than 70,000 children annually from San Antonio, SouthTexas and around the world.

The hospital (in partnership withBaylor College of Medicine) is the only academic children’shospital in San Antonio. Our highly specialized services meet theunique medical needs of children, from Pediatric and NeonatalIntensive Care to Children’s Emergency Services, the latesttreatments for deformities of the spine including titanium ribimplants and halo traction, a Heart Center, a specialized asthmaprogram, a highly regarded Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, andgrowing maternal services to include consultation, delivery, andmaternal fetal medicine.

Responsibilities :

  • Meets expectations of theapplicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies : Leader of Self, Leader ofOthers, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Consistent withthe ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, provides nursing careutilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis,planning, intervention and evaluation for assignedpatients.
  • Addresses increasingly complexpsychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patient andfamilies in accordance with their level ofpractice.
  • Using the appropriate protocol,administers medications and treatments; monitors for side-effectsand effectiveness of the treatment prescribed.
  • Documents patient history, symptoms, medication, and caregiven.
  • Assess learning needs and provideseducation to patients, family members and / or care givers; identifyissues and resources.

  • Coaches on tools and techniques forchecking, cross checking and validating orders to ensureaccuracy

  • Plans, directs, andevaluates the overall nursing care and functions in a particularnursing unit during an assignedshift
  • Demonstrates good stewardship in properuse and maintenance of equipment andSupplies
  • Assesses departmental staffing needs;actively participates in resourcing efforts.
  • Educates and trains others on the operations, ethics, andregulations within the industry

  • Discusses common errors, their sourcesand procedures for correcting
  • Explainsconsiderations for entering and following standingorders
  • Differentiates between standing ordersand preprinted orders and considerations foreach

Patient Chart Reading andInterpretation

  • Describes experiencesin reading and interpreting patient charts for patients on unit andunder own care
  • Reviews patients’ charts forcompletion and accuracy; identifies and alerts to mistakes oromissions
  • Recognizes unexpected readings andalerts nursing or medical staff
  • Relatesexamples of mis-readings or misinterpretations and lessonslearned
  • Reviews, discusses and validates owninterpretation with others

Patient Safety

  • Sharesexperiences with ensuring safety for one or more patient groups orsettings
  • Explains key features of safetyguidelines and procedures for those groups andsettings
  • Listens and responds to safetyinquiries from patients and familymembers

JobRequirements : Education / Skills

Education / Skills

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing,preferred
  • All newly hired experienced RNs mustattend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days ofhire.
  • New hires are precepted by a designatedtrained staff member and initial on-boarding requirements arevalidated through successful completion of the designatedorganizational entry competency validation and a PerinatalDepartment-specific competency validation.
  • Completion of all annual competencyverification requirements.

Experience

  • 1 year of experience in the related nursingspecialty preferred
  • Perinatal RN Residency, orrecently practicing in a Perinatal Setting ispreferred.

Licenses,Registrations, or Certifications

  • BLS required
  • RN License instate of employment or compact
  • Current certification from NCC ElectronicFetal Monitoring (C-EFM) or one of the following AWHONN courses : Intermediate FHM, Intermediate FHM Instructor, Advanced FHMInstructor, or Instructor Trainer at the time of hire forexperienced nurses.

If previously uncertified, certification mustbe obtained within 30 days of hire as they cannot practiceindependently without it.

For new graduates and experienced nursesnew to the specialty, certification must be obtained within 4months of hire and maintained thereafter.

Current STABLE(Post-resuscitation / Pre-transport Stabilization Care of SickInfants) certification from one of the following courses : Participant, Lead Instructor, or Support Instructor at the time ofhire for experienced nurses.

If previously uncertified,certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire as theycannot practice independently without it.

For new graduates andexperienced nurses new to the specialty, certification must beobtained within 4 months of hire and maintainedthereafter.

  • Current ACLS certification within30 days of hire for experienced nurses; within 90 days of hire fornew graduates then required to maintain certificationthereafter.
  • Current NRP certification at timeof hire for experienced nurses; within 60 days for new graduatesand experienced nurses new to the specialty then required tomaintain certification thereafter.
