The Tribal Learning Community and Education Exchange (TLCEE) Program's primary objective is to increase educational exchange and learning between tribal communities and UCLA by mutual sharing of knowledge, developing strategic policies and initiatives that address contemporary tribal issues and by promoting greater recruitment, participation, and retention of indigenous students in higher education.

Under the general supervision of the Director of the American Indian Studies Center (AISC) and the Vice Provost for the Institute of American Cultures, the TLCEE Director will be responsible for a range of functions to ensure the success of the TLCEE Program and its mission.

Those functions include short and long-term planning, financial management, program development,outreach, community engagement, and student advising.

The Director will report to the TLCEE Steering Committee and the AISC Director. The TLCEE Director will coordinate with other stakeholders as needed, including the Department of American Indian Studies, UCLA Extension, the Native Recruiter in Undergraduate Admissions, the Coordinator of the American Indian Recruitment (AIR) program, and community-based partners on activities of the program.

The Director will develop the strategic direction and goals of the program, create the annual operating budget with sensitivity to expanding TLCEE resources through donor cultivation and grant opportunities, and ensure there is a consistent and positive presence in local and regional Tribal Communities.

The Director will teach two courses for the fiscal year to UCLA students through the American Indian Studies Department.

The Director will oversee the programming of on-line courses offered to the community through UCLA Extension, including decision-making regarding courses offered and coordinating with UCLA extension and lecturers hired to teach these courses.

The Director will conduct outreach visits to Southern California high schools to work with Native students, sharing information about their options for college, the how to prepare for applying to college while still in high school, the application process.

One of the most important aspects of this work is to develop relationships, help students see and understand themselves as potential college goers, and to provide information and support throughout the process.

The percentage breakdown of the position will be split between administrative and teaching : 70% administrative and 30% teaching for the entire fiscal year.

Qualifications include a terminal or top degree in the appointee's field, e.g., Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., or the highest degree that is commonly expected for appointment in the activity.

In the field of Nursing and related activities, for example, the M.P.H., M.N., or M.S. may usually be accepted as a top degree.
