Department Information

Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources.

IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24 / 7 / 365 operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary

  • Monitors the campus for safety hazards and compliance with OSHA safety requirements.
  • Investigates injuries and illnesses, provides corrective action recommendations as necessary, and tracks injuries and illnesses.
  • Performs job hazard assessments; recommends measures to control harmful exposures including administration and engineering controls, as well as personal protective equipment and work practice changes.
  • Researches toxicological properties of workplace materials used, determines at-risk personnel, and develops sampling strategies to measure hazardous exposure.
  • Compares measurements of toxicological results to established legal allowable limits, reports findings to appropriate personnel, recommends and implements corrective actions, and conducts follow-up activities to ensure control measures are effective.
  • Provides technical expertise on a broad range of topics to ensure that safety and well-being are not adversely affected by hazards in academic and work environments.
  • Answers questions and offers expert advice related to all aspects of safety on campus.
  • Performs a variety of occupational safety and industrial hygiene tasks including, but not limited to, ergonomic evaluations, odor response, indoor air quality evaluations, field work, fit testing, meetings and presentations, exposure assessments, safety program and policy development, training development and presentation, technical writing, using an calibrating monitoring equipment, and other safety related administrative activities.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience.

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor's degree preferably in industrial hygiene, occupational health, science, or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

2 years of related experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations.

It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend / descend ladders / stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and / or gases.

The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
