Registered Nurse (Experienced) Duke University Hospital Orthopedics Operating Room - Durham

Newly Hired RNs (with at least one year Nursing experience) will be eligible to receive a $15,000 sign-on bonus that will be paid out over 24 months.

The Orthopedic Operating Room at Duke University Hospital is a specialized surgical unit dedicated to providing advanced orthopedic care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

Our state-of-the-art facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology to support a wide range of orthopedic procedures, including joint replacements, spine surgeries, fracture repairs, free vascularized fibula bone graft (Free Fib) surgeries, sports injuries, and complex reconstructions.

Common Procedures and Surgeries

  • Total Joint Replacement (Hip, Knee, Ankle, Elbow and Shoulder)
  • Arthroscopic Surgeries (Knee, Shoulder, Hip)
  • Spine Surgeries (Spinal Fusion, Laminectomy, Discectomy)
  • Fracture Repairs (Open Reduction and Internal Fixation, External Fixation)
  • Rotator Cuff Repair
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction
  • Carpal Tunnel Release
  • Hand and Wrist Surgery (Total Wrist)
  • Foot and Ankle Surgery (Total Talus with custom implants, Bunionectomy, Achilles Tendon Repair)
  • Revision Joint Surgery (for failed joint replacements)
  • Osteotomy (Bone realignment procedures)
  • Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeries Staffed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, perioperative nurses, surgical technologists, and support staff, the unit ensures the highest patient safety and care standards.

The team works collaboratively to provide personalized, evidence-based care focusing on patient outcomes and recovery. Our nurses are certified in perioperative nursing and have specialized training in orthopedic procedures.

They play a critical role in preparing patients for surgery, assisting in the operating room, and supporting post-operative recovery.

The unit emphasizes continuous professional development and a strong culture of teamwork, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care.

The Orthopedic OR collaborates closely with other departments, including physical therapy, radiology, and pain management, to ensure comprehensive care throughout the surgical experience.

Preferred Qualifications : 3+ Year Operating Room Experience (including scrub experience). Trauma experience preferred but not required.

Job Summary : As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere.

The Clinical Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities.

Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department.

Plan and provide advanced and / or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned.

Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required :

  • Previous work experience (1+ years) as a clinical nurse is preferred; at least one year previous work experience as a registered nurse is required for a CN2 role.
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required : * Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.

BLS (or higher) certification required.* Professional specialty certification (preferred). All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
