This is an internal posting for existing City of Burlington Building Services Employees.
About us : The Building Services division is a part of the Public Works division and is responsible for maintenance and repair and some general construction on all City buildings and facilities.
What you will do : An employee in this role leads and performs skilled tasks in maintaining and repairing municipal buildings, facilities, and grounds. Responsibilities include carpentry, remodeling, painting, plumbing, electrical work, roofing, and HVAC preventative maintenance. The position involves operating various tools, inspecting sites, and prioritizing repairs and renovations while ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.
Examples of Duties
- Carpentry & Construction Leadership : Lead, organize, and execute carpentry and construction projects to enhance and maintain municipal buildings.
- Multi-Trade Support : Assist with building services tasks such as electrical work, plumbing, locksmithing, and painting as needed.
- HVAC Maintenance : Conduct routine preventative services on HVAC systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Framing & Carpentry Tasks : Perform framing, carpentry, and interior partitioning; build and repair floors; frame and trim doors / windows; hang and repair doors and associated mechanisms, including locks and hinges.
- Plumbing Maintenance : Install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures like sinks, toilets, faucets, and related equipment.
- Electrical Services : Perform routine electrical work, including installing / replacing light fixtures and ballasts, and troubleshooting breakers, switches, plugs, and wires.
- Roofing & Repairs : Install and repair roofing using nail guns and other tools; troubleshoot leaks and perform minor roofing damage repairs.
- Furniture Handling : Move, adjust, and relocate office furniture, including desks, chairs, and files.
- Facility Inspections : Travel between sites to inspect buildings, facilities, and grounds for needed repairs and prioritize renovations.
- Safety & Efficiency : Ensure all work activities are performed safely and efficiently, adhering to industry standards.
- Additional Duties : Undertake related tasks as required to support building services operations.
Qualifications
Technical Mastery :
Deep understanding of carpentry, construction, and building services.Proficient in rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry, wood finishing, and related techniques.Extensive knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment for construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings.Multi-Trade Knowledge :
Strong technical knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.Familiarity with city policies relevant to building services operations.Leadership and Project Management :
Skilled in organizing projects, leading teams, and guiding tasks to completion.Adept at estimating materials, equipment, costs, and timelines for building maintenance and construction projects.Technical Proficiency :
Ability to operate and maintain specialized tools for carpentry, plumbing, and other trades.Capable of measuring and calculating angles, lengths, and volumes with precision.Administrative Abilities :
Expertise in creating and maintaining accurate records and preparing detailed work orders.Interpersonal and Professional Skills :
Proven ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with the public and city employees.Displays tact, sound judgment, and courtesy in all interactions.Minimum Qualifications :
High School Diploma or GED equivalency with specialized training in building maintenance and repair, and extensive work experience in construction or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Valid North Carolina Driver LicenseSupplemental Information
