Position Overview :
The Cost Estimator will play a vital role in planning and supervising the preparation of construction cost estimates for various building projects within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with team members and stakeholders.
Minimum Required Qualifications :
- Bachelors degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
- At least 10 years of full-time paid professional experience in preparation of complete cost estimates for Type I, II, III, and V building construction as defined by the State building code, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
- Strong knowledge of current local construction labor and material costs.
- Extensive experience in developing and estimating the scope of work for change orders.
- Ability to compare independent cost estimates with contractor proposals to quickly identify differences.
- Ability to develop scopes of work based on RFI / RFC answers and estimate detailed costs independent of contractor proposals.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and provide confirmation.
Key Responsibilities :
- Plan, supervise, and participate in preparing construction cost estimates from drawings, outlines, and specifications.
- Review cost estimates and documentation for securing State and federal grants and loans.
- Check and compare estimates submitted by architects and engineers with District estimates for accuracy.
- Resolve discrepancies in cost estimates through collaboration and negotiation.
- Analyze contractor bids and prepare reports on any significant variances.
- Assess and recommend acceptance or rejection of contractor cost estimates for progress payments.
- Prepare change order estimates and provide support in price negotiations.
- Conduct seminars and workshops on bidding procedures and cost estimating.
- Develop and maintain data on estimated versus actual construction costs.
- Establish budgets for school building projects and assist other branches as needed.
