The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) , located in Rosemont, IL, is the largest, most influential, and representative dermatology association in the United States.

With a membership of more than 20,500 physicians worldwide, the AAD is committed to : advancing the diagnosis and medical, surgical, and cosmetic treatment of the skin, hair, and nails;

advocating high standards in clinical practice, education, and research in dermatology; and supporting and enhancing patient care for a lifetime of healthier skin, hair, and nails.

The Vice President of Science and Quality role at the American Academy of Dermatology will provide strategic leadership, direction, and day-to-day management of all Academy functions related to clinical guidance development, performance measurement, quality improvement and our clinical registry, DataDerm.

  • This position will oversee an ongoing quality improvement agenda; support the advancement of dermatologic clinical research;
  • establish new and expanded business opportunities related to DataDerm, such as derivative products, licensure, and business agreements;

manage business performance to ensure efficient program operations; and work collaboratively across the organization to further the Academy’s mission and achieve our strategic goals.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in developing and implementing products and services, along with excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills for interacting with members, healthcare institutions, Board of Directors, and staff across the organization at all levels.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong strategic, business, and financial leadership skills, thus ensuring effective goal implementation and risk management while fostering member and staff engagement.

Important criteria for new leader success in this role include :

  • Strong strategic commercialization skills, particularly in growing DataDerm, Academy’s clinical registry.
  • A proactive, visionary leader capable of leveraging guidelines, data, and AI to help the organization standardize care and improve outcomes.
  • Ability to ensure integrity amid industry conflicts of interest.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Oversight :

  • Provide leadership, strategic vision, and day-to-day management of clinical data collection, research, and quality activities to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  • Ensure scientific integrity across all operations at AAD, particularly in the creation and implementation of clinical practice guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Council on Science and Research and the Board of Directors to define and implement research and quality initiatives aligned with the Academy’s strategies.
  • Develop and oversee a business plan for our clinical registry, DataDerm, to identify new revenue streams and commercial opportunities.
  • Continuous improvement mindset related to operationalizing guidelines into standard practice with a focus on the impact of future trends impacting the industry (AI, new technologies, etc.).
  • Innovation as it relates to how to get more members participating in DataDerm and how to get higher levels of adoption of guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities : Four teams report into this role :

Guidelines Team : Oversees the creation of guidelines ensuring they align with organization priorities and are free of conflicts of interest.

Focuses on identifying experts and conducting research.

  • Quality Team : Develops and implements our quality initiatives including the development of our performance measures based on guidelines.
  • DataDerm Team : Oversees the development and growth of our registry and utilizes data to advance organizational goals.
  • Operations Team : Handles research requests, produces documentation, and maintains academy physician statements.
  • Supervisory responsibilities include setting and communicating clear expectations and providing regular feedback; recruiting, developing, and retaining talent;

and aligning staff strengths with Academy priorities.

Executive Project Sponsor Responsibility :

  • Support project teams by ensuring strategic alignment, providing guidance, and resolving conflicts.
  • Set clear visions and expectations, validate goals, and engage actively in projects.

Business Development :

  • Collaborate with the business development team to strategize and achieve targets for new and expanded business opportunities related to the clinical registry.
  • Oversee the performance and achievement of goals related to clinical guidelines, measures, and evidence-based products.
  • Maintain an ongoing and coordinated dermatology research and quality improvement agenda.

Department Oversight :

  • Ensure the Science and Quality department meets operational and budgetary objectives.
  • Promote community and collaboration among department staff.

Executive Team Responsibilities :

  • Maintain focus to ensure that the organization remains aligned with its strategic plan.
  • Contribute to team health, demonstrating respect, effective communication, and professional challenge.
  • Drive cultural change, model the Academy’s values, and engage in team development.

Staff Liaison Responsibilities :

  • Act as an advocate, administrator, and resource to assigned councils, committees, task forces, or work groups (CCTFs).
  • Support members in idea formation, resource management, and creating an inclusive environment.
  • Collaborate with CCTF chairs to plan, develop, and advance agendas in line with the Academy’s strategic plan and budget.
  • Manage meeting logistics, disseminate agendas, and ensure updated disclosure forms.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in management sciences (such as MSN, MHA, or MBA) required, with understanding of health care industry, medical informatics, and business management.
  • Minimum of 16 years of progressive experience in the healthcare industry, at least five of which in a quality improvement environment.
  • Minimum of 8 years of project and team management experience in the health care industry.
  • Experience with negotiating and overseeing licensure and business agreements.

  • Ability to communicate and build solid relationships with physicians, industry executives, board members and other industry centers of influence who can help advance the organization's mission.
  • Strong customer focused mindset both internal and external.
  • Ability to engage on media calls to validate science and speak to where science is headed as well as to create talking points for physicians.
  • Understand business functions and their impact on financial and non-financial outcomes, ensuring interrelation across sections.
  • Stay informed about association and membership organization climates, develop responsive strategies, and work with elected leaders and volunteers.
  • Organize and evaluate information, alternatives, and risks to determine cost-effective solutions.
  • Convert goals into actionable plans, navigate conflicting priorities, and ensure organizational alignment.
  • Lead and coach others, foster collaboration, and communicate effectively to gain support for initiatives.
  • Manage vendor relationships, write and assess RFPs, and ensure compliance with contract specifications.
  • Analyze information to make sound decisions, anticipate problems, and explore alternatives in advance.
  • Collaborate with member leadership and the board of directors to set goals and define strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
