At Houston Methodist the Physical Therapy(PT) Clinical Fellow position completes planned program ofpostprofessional clinical and didactic education provided forrehabilitation services modality that is designed to complete theguidelines as set by the Physical Therapy Board of ExaminersAssociation.

This position focuses in preparation as a provider ofsafe expert patient care services through the fellowship programwhich combines opportunities for necessary clinical supervision andmentoring with a theoretical basis for advanced practice andscientific inquiry.

The PT Clinical Fellow position performspatient management services including evaluation treatment referralsupervises support personnel (as applicable) and performs relatedduties such as participation in rounds clinics departmentalperformance improvement and clinical education in accordance withregulatory agency / professional association guidelines statepractice act applicable regulations and departmental policyprocedures and practices.

This position demonstrates competence toadapt to work and customer service to accommodate the uniquephysical psychosocial cultural safety and other developmental needsof patients served by thedepartment.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Promotes apositive work environment and contributes to a dynamic teamfocusedwork unit that actively helps one other to achieve optimaldepartment results.

Collaborates with all members of the patientcare team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patientcare information and data in a comprehensivemanner.

  • Cooperates andcollaborates with members of the interprofessional healthcaretreatment team regarding patients current treatment progress anddischargeplanning.
  • Providescontributions towards improvement of department scores for employeeengagement i.e. peertopeeraccountability.

SERVICEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Evaluates patientslevel of function; develops and implements plan of treatment.Collaborates and communicates with the healthcare team anymodifications to patients treatment plan progress and dischargeplanning for achievement of identified patient specific goalsfollowing evidence basedguidelines.
  • Performscomplete and comprehensive evaluation of assigned patients toidentify patients level of function and to determine the treatmentplan.

Develops the plan of care based on evaluation findingsimplementing the physical therapy treatmentplan.

Provides educationwhich includes active listening and teaching to patients familymembers and / or caregivers. Consistently evaluates the patientscomprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly.

Serves asresource to clinical residents and nursing in teaching bestpractices.

Contributes tomeeting / exceeding department and organization targets for patientsatisfaction.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Overseesappropriate patient care duties and those treatments delegated toassistants and technicians in accordance with the state practiceact and department and hospitalpolicies.
  • Monitors patientprogress; maintain timely and accurate patientrecords.
  • Completes allpatient documentation and enters charges for servicesprovided.
  • Identifies andescalates issues and opportunities for improvement. Follows up onaction items to ensure completion of assignments.

Contributestowards improving department / practice quality and safetyscores.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • With guidance usesresources efficiently to maximize utilization of time andequipment. Selfmotivated to independently manage time effectivelyand prioritize tasks for self and clinical fellowshipassignments.
  • Maintainsaccurate and complete documentation of patient education andprocedures performed in a timely manner in the patient record.

Enters accurate charges for services provided asapplicable.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Participates inindividual and staff development and expansion of servicesincluding research projects. Presents relevant special topics inprofessional literature at clinic meetings rounds conference andmeetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.

Completes asappropriate presentations and case reports to complete Fellowshipcurriculum.

Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continual process improvements. Remains current onprofessional issues and clinical skills by attendance ofappropriate CEUs and involvement with professional organization.

Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an ongoing basis.Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriatemanagement.

Graduateof education program approved by the credentialing body for therequired credential(s) indicated below in the Certificates Licensesand Registrationssection.

WORKEXPERIENCE

Oneyear physical therapy experience with one of thefollowing :

  • Completion of HM or comparablePhysical Therapy Residency program
  • With boardspecialty Certification in applicable contentarea

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • PTPhysical Therapist State Licensure within 30 daysor
  • PTTemp Physical Therapist Temporary StateLicensure Compact Privileges granted by the Texas Board of PhysicalTherapy Examiners and permanent Texas PT licensureand
  • BLS Basic Life Support (AHA)

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ANDABILITIES

  • Demonstrates theskills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assignedjob determined through ongoing skills competency assessments andperformanceevaluations.
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity.
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples.
