KIPP Academy Lynn Chart School is looking for a compassionate and dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to serve as the go-to person for health concerns on campus.
The School Nurse - LPN works in a fast-paced environment and manages multiple priorities to ensure that our students receive the medical care they need.
In addition, the School Nurse - LPN meticulously maintains health screening programs and documentation to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
This position requires initiative, meticulous follow-through, the ability to work with a diverse population, and a willingness to uphold the high expectations set by KIPP MA.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
General Responsibilities for LPN
Promote, implement, and uphold the professional standards of school nursing practice as established by the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act
Apply nursing practices to the unique needs of individuals, groups, and populations of the school
Follow state and local health practice statutes, district policies, and administrative guidelines
Serve as a medical resource and health advocate for students and staff
Provide appropriate health assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referrals for students, including those with acute / chronic health conditions and in emergency situations
Play a key role in identifying health concerns and treatment measures
Administer over-the-counter medications and prescribed medications with doctor’s orders included
Conduct mandated health screenings
Ensure the privacy and ethical standards mandated by the state of Massachusetts
General Responsibilities for 1 : 1 Nurse
Follow all expectations in the students Individualized Health Care Plan + Individualized Education Program
Internalize and implement documentation
Review any IEPs, ICHPs, and Doctor’s Orders in collaboration with the Campus Nurse Lead
Be primarily responsible for the student’s daily medical care while at school and during school-related events during the school day (ex.
field trips), as outlined by the student’s Individual Health Care Plan + Individualized Education Program
Be primarily responsible for the student’s medical care on transportation to and from school in the event that a student has transportation with a nurse as mandated by their Individualized Health Care Plan and / or Individualized Education Program
Provide toileting support as needed
Provide copies of all medical orders / updates and other relevant medical paperwork to the Campus Nurse Lead
Document all medical interventions with the student while at school, on transportation to and from school, and during school-related events in SNAP at the time of the medical intervention and no later than the end of the school day
Communicate with campus nursing team, classroom teachers and staff, and student’s family about student medical needs and other issues related to the student
Communicate with Campus Nurse Lead + Director of Strategic Projects if you are absent from work
If and when the student is absent : All nurses employed by KIPP MA are a part of the campus nursing team. If the student that a 1 : 1 Nurse works with is absent from school, the 1 : 1 Nurse is expected to check in with the Campus Nurse Lead upon arrival and support with the campus nurse’s office and related tasks as needed and directed
Caring for Students with Diabetes
In order to properly care for students with diabetes during the school day, KIPP MA must have on file written permission from the parent or guardian to treat and transport the student, as well as a doctor’s order, updated each school year, that outlines the care plan for that student
School nurses may not administer medication, including insulin, without an up-to-date doctor’s order (CRM #38 Administration of Drugs)
In the absence of a doctor’s order and permission to treat and transport, the family of the student is responsible for administration of any medication to the student, including insulin, as well as transporting the student to and from school
In the absence of a doctor’s order and permission to treat and transport, the student’s 1 : 1 Nurse may continue to provide support to the student throughout the day by monitoring their glucose level with CGM (not fingerstick), providing toileting support as needed, and tending to additional medical concerns as they arise
Medication Administration
All School Nurse - LPNs are responsible for operating within the school, state, and Board of Nursing guidelines pertaining to medication administration .
A general understanding of these guidelines and operation within the scope of the rules and procedures, outlined and delegated by the person’s manager- is critical to effective service as a School Nurse - LPN.

Maintain required licensure with the MA Board of Registration in Nursing and continue to be eligible to be certified by the KIPP MA Board of Trustees

Demonstrated ability to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make reasonable judgments and decisions in a timely manner in accordance with the needs of the school
Self-awareness, flexibility and emotional intelligence to navigate a setting with students who express diverse needs
The consistent use of interpersonal and self-management skills to effectively support behavioral and emotional needs of students to ensure a safe and inclusive environment, as well as build relationships and manage conflict with students, staff, and caregivers
Effective communication skills to perform assigned duties and to meaningfully exchange information with students, staff, families and others in person, through written communication, in front of groups, and on virtual platforms
Physical mobility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include kneeling, walking, pushing / pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead
Physical strength sufficient to periodically lift and / or carry 20 pounds of materials or supplies and to physically restrain a student to keep from harming themself and / or others in an emergency situation
Manual dexterity sufficient to perform repetitive hand / wrist / arm motions and to operate a computer and office equipment
KIPP MA staff are supported in their demanding work by experienced and dedicated leadership and staff who have themselves proven successful in the teaching role.

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, there will occasionally be other duties as assigned that staff will engage in to help promote a positive and safe learning environment and culture.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS if applicable

Qualifications

Experience with clerical proficiency
Computer literacy and baseline familiarity with Google Suite
Bedside nursing experience (one year preferred)
BLS CPR / AED certified
Experience with SNAP health portal (preferred, but will train)
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) (preferred)
Eligibility as a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) School Nurse (preferred)
Registered through the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN)
Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Massachusetts in good standing

What We Offer
The minimum base salary for this exempt position is $55,000 (per 1.0 FTE). The role includes a $1,000 signing bonus and an annual $2,000 retention bonus in subsequent years, as well as other bonuses, when eligible.
