Job Summary

Under the direction of individual assigned service leaders, the Assistant Nurse Manager assumes responsibility and accountability for optimal clinical outcomes.

The Assistant Nurse Manager ensures optimal patient / client and family care is being delivered through a fiscally sound and safe process.

The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the shared governance process and staff involvement in cooperation with the service line leaders.

The Assistant Nurse Manager supports a healthy workplace environment and empowers collaborative decision making through a multidisciplinary approach.

Nursing Process : Ensures patient centered care is being delivered at the highest level of practice from each direct care provider.

Utilizes team members by skill levels to assure high quality outcomes for patients and staff members.

Assures the proper persons complete all assignments.

Plans assignments with appropriate coverage.

Communicates with the appropriate resources as staffing needs change.

Anticipates potential problems and assists in problem solving.

Supports staff in prioritization of work to be done.

Uses staff input to solve problems involving patient care.

Is a resource for new staff assigned to units.

Acts as a unit resource for complex patients.

Takes a leadership role in giving expedient, high quality care to both patients and families.

Follows staffing needs during assigned shifts to insure appropriate coverage.

Strongly adheres to budget guidelines.

Supports and participates in shared governance.

Nursing Leadership : Promotes effective integration of system wide and patient care service initiatives into the delivery and management of patient care.

Identifies system’s problems and coordinates resolution utilizing multidisciplinary resources.

Gives constructive feedback to staff and models leadership behaviors.

Leads and motivates others to achieve team, unit, and Bristol Hospital goals.

Encourages accountabilities with individual team members.

Collaborates effectively with Physicians, supervisors, and other departments.

Uses constructive feedback to all team members.

Will become a liaison between team members when needed.

Participated in patient care rounds with the multidisciplinary team regularly, with consideration for effective clinical / fiscal management of care.

Works closely with all team members in delivering swift quality care to patients and their families.

Provides effective collaboration as required in order to ensure safe patient care is being delivered at all times.

Nursing Research : Bases nursing judgment on evidence based practice and evidenced based leadership.

Communicates effectively and acts as an information resource regarding unit specific policies and procedures.

Acts as a role model for team members in supporting and complying with evidence based policies and procedures.

Investigates incident reports that occur during assigned shifts and relays this information to the service line leaders.

Participates in instituting changes in policies based on literature and research findings.

Takes a lead position in quality improvement.

Collects data and participates with appraisals under assistance and direction of the operations manager.

Actively participates in Q.A. projects and promotes and integrates NDNQI data into the clinical operations of the department.

Investigates any disciplinary issues and reports issues to the service line leader.

Nursing as a Profession : A role model for attaining the highest level of professionalism.

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, leads the intra and interdepartmental communication and collaboration.

Builds trusting, collaborative relationships.

Is a role model in improving the care delivery process.

Fosters an environment of teamwork, with quality care for the patient being the primary goal.

Facilitates staff participation in educational programs.

Participates in his / her professional organization.

Submits posters or abstract related to nursing leadership at regional or national conferences.

Nursing education : Demonstrates expert knowledge and skill necessary to promote excellence in care to clinical needs of the patients and staff served.

Demonstrates the ability to evaluate data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the information to the staff for effective delivery of care.

Shares knowledge and information with other members of the health care team.

Acts as an advocate by providing patients / families / staff information to effectively manage the health problem and the health care system.

Utilizing appropriate nursing judgment, implements or delegates care specific to the practice area and evaluates outcomes.

Facilitates clinical resources as indicated by patient / family needs.

Leads and participates in (1) community activities (i.e. wellness program, health fair, job fair, etc). Leads (2) professional development activities (i.

e. Nursing grad rounds, Quality presentation etc).

Qualifications

Qualifications :

Graduation from an accredited nursing school. BSN or current enrollment in BSN program required

Current Connecticut Registered Nurse license is required before the start date

Minimum 2 years of behavioral health RN experience required

Charge or supervisory experience required

Certification in the specialty area(s) required within 2 years from hire

Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements :

General orientation at time of hire. Fire / Safety / Infection control annually. Successfully complete all training programs as determined by the Education & HRD department.

Other unit based competencies / skills as required.

Special Requirements :

Successfully complete unit based competency package, plus unit specific items. Strong team skills.

Physical Requirements :

Physical agility with repetitive occurrence including but not limited to; walking, running, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, reaching, standing, sitting, and twisting.

Lifting greater than 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout the work day. Looking at a computer monitor for up to two hours daily.

Vision acuity correctable to normal with normal color perception. Hearing acuity correctable to normal. Acute sense of smell for normal perception.

Ability to verbalize so that the average person can comprehend.

Work Environment :

Regular exposure to patient elements, occasional stress.

Cognitive Requirements :

Aspiring nurse leaders who can critically think, self-directed and adapt to change. The incumbent will have a desire to manage the service line, lead the people and have personal and professional accountability.
