Duties

  • In this position, you will be assigned to a Class I (over 1400, c.y.) hopper dredge.
  • The dredge is characterized (electrically) by units ranging from fractional HP to several hundred or, several thousand HP with the majority carrying from 240 to 720 volts.
  • Makes scheduled and special operational checks of equipment to include switchboards, rheostats, relays, circuit breakers voltage regulators, dredge pump speed control system, telemotor steering system, engine order telegraph, etc.
  • Observes gauges, pistons, notes unusual conditions (heating, oil or grease loss, loose fittings, broken or inoperative units, etc.

and makes repairs or adjustments as required.

  • Makes periodic or special preventative maintenance checks of units.
  • Listens, dismantles, observes, replaces scheduled or worn elements, lubricates, packs, repairs, etc., as indicated.
  • Installs replacement or new equipment (floodlights, signals, fixtures, etc.)
  • Repairs, or participates in the repair, of any electrical unit on board (motors, pumps, generators, control panels, special equipment, etc.)
  • Itemizes materials and parts used. Changes instrument charts.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be willing to serve a one-year probationary period, if applicable.
  • Position requires a pre-employment physical, then annually thereafter
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Travel may be required up to 5% of the time.
  • Must be willing to take and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and must be willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol tests thereafter.

Basic Requirement for Position :

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) : Ability to do the work of a Marine Electrician without more than normal supervision.

Your resume must demonstrate your ability to perform common maintenance duties on electrical equipment aboard a sea-going vessel such as repairing electrical equipment, using hand tools, and determining when there is an issue.

Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Licensing / Certification (Selective Placement Factor) : In addition to meeting the experience requirement of this position, applicants :

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Must possess a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC).

Physical Efforts :

Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of the system worked on are in hard-to-reach places.

Duties require long periods of time standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment, and parts that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions :

Work is performed primarily in closed areas with some work outside. Considerable time is spent in or adjacent to the engine room area with its attendant noise, heat, and fumes.

Works in very close places and in awkward positions. Subject to the usual electrical hazards involving shock, strain, burns, cuts, falls from ladders, and fumes and heat while working in confined quarters.

Information about working aboard the Dredge McFarland :

  • Regular tour of duty is 15 consecutive workdays, followed by 13 days off.
  • Residence on board the dredge during the work period is a necessary condition of employment.
  • While the dredge is operating, subsistence and quarters are provided free of charge.
  • Transportation to and from the dredge is at the employee's expense.
  • The Dredge McFARLAND is in a ready reserve status and operates on the Delaware River 70 days per year. The remainder of the year is spent on performing maintenance or periods at the Shipyard.

The Ship may also be called out to perform emergency dredging along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts and be able to respond within 72 hours to get underway.
