General Summary :

The Foundation at UM Health-West serves to activate and incubate change in the West Michigan healthcare landscape through philanthropy.

The Major Gifts Officer Intermediate champions our mission by connecting donors to aligned opportunities within the system.

Reporting to the Foundation Director, they help set fundraising strategy, develop and maintain a major gift donor portfolio, and oversee Capital Campaigns.

Travel is typically local to West Michigan, with occasional travel to Lansing and / or Ann Arbor for collaboration with UM Health-Sparrow and Michigan Medicine Development.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible development experience.
  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and / planned major gifts, with healthcare fundraising experience preferred.
  • Experience with CRM software process management, Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Proven success working strategically in a multifaceted development environment, working effectively with diverse groups of people including volunteers, donors, physicians, and health care staff in a way that engenders trust and confidence.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine, and mature personal style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to travel locally and adjust schedules to meet donor needs.
  • Reliable internet service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities :

Strategic Planning

  • Create and implement a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support for key institutional priorities, capital needs, and patient care from grateful patients, volunteers, retirees, Foundations, granting organizations, UM alumni and community partners in coordination and collaboration with the Foundation Director.
  • Serve as primary oversight of the planning, management, and growth of Capital Campaign strategies, including : design of campaign objectives, budgets, and timelines;

maintaining master campaign calendar; and providing technical support to the Capital Campaign Committee.

  • Partner with Database Coordinator to gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.
  • Aggressively identify, and formally qualify, new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategy, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making significant gifts.
  • Prepares, manages and maintains budget and expenses for assigned fundraising programs.
  • Support the Director in Strategic Departmental oversight. This may include but are not limited to : Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.

Donor & Prospect Management

  • Personally maintain a portfolio of approximately 125-150 major and planned gift prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, UMHW leaders, and volunteers spending approximately 80% of time on direct fundraising efforts.
  • Conduct a minimum of 100 face to face visits with prospects and donors per year and participate in approximately 15 - 30 solicitations per year, focused on gifts of $10K - $250K or more.
  • Manage select grant proposals and reports for personal / family foundations that fold into Major Gifts as needed.
  • Work with clinical leaders to develop strategies and engagement opportunities around grateful patients focused on increasing philanthropic support.
  • Provide volunteer / fundraising board staff support and lead both internal and external groups in the identification, qualification, and evaluation of major, principal, and planned gift prospects.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of UM Health-West priorities. Make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and University needs.
  • Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate, or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship. Ensures timely and appropriate stewardship to major, capital, and planned giving donors in conjunction with the Director and Annual Giving Specialist.

Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with other department leaders and system development personnel in identifying referral opportunities.
  • Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other U of M Development units to ensure effective collaboration in achieving fundraising goals.
