Fair Labor Standards Act Status : Hourly

Hours per week : Part-time, two days a week, 0.4 FTE

Scheduled Work Hours / Shift : Monday-Friday, 8 : 00am - 5 : 00pm

Patient Population Focus : Inpatient at SJCH

Patient Population Age Range : 0 years - 21 years

Required Minimum Training :

Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

APRN License Type / Certification :

o PCPNP / PNP (Primary Care Pediatric NP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner) : Pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.

o FNP (Family NP) : (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.

Preferred Training :

PACNP (Pediatric Acute Care NP) : Pediatric pts (birth to age 21), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable or technologically dependent.

Preferred Experience : At least 2 years of pediatric neurosurgical care RN or NP / PA-C experience is preferred.

Degree of Supervision : Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising / Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date : Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Job Duties (list job tasks)

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities :

  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief

o ICP monitor trouble shooting and removal

o obtaining CSF from ventricular reservoirs

o EVDs, Subdural drains, Lumbar drain trouble shooting and removal

o wound management

o Suturing

o assisting in procedures in the ICU and procedure room setting and other relevant procedures which the pediatric neurosurgery faculty deems appropriate under their service)

  • Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and / or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality / performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs / CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
  • Provides direct care to patients through the following activities : Evaluating and managing inpatients on the Pediatric Neurological Surgery Service.

Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations, and discharge summaries. Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice protocols and collaborative scope of practice agreement.

Performs procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the appropriate credentialing body.

Works with peds neurosurgery consultation services to manage, bill and provide procedural services to all patients on that service (PICU, NICU, ED).

Will be tasked with doing consultations, reviewing these consultations with the primary pediatric chief resident and the pediatric neurosurgery attending.

Manage neurosurgical issues on consultations patients in the pediatric intensive care unit, the neonatal intensive care unit, and any other part of the children’s hospital which has neurosurgery consultation patients.

Management of pediatric neurosurgery consultation includes but is not limited to, ordering imaging studies, recommending medical care, discussion with faculty and other services, arranging outpatient needs, responding to neurosurgical issues through pages, performing procedures

Supervise care delivered by nursing and auxiliary health care staff, communicate with family members regarding patient care and concerns and provide administrative support and follow up to ensure patient care is orderly and effective.

Provide clinical instruction and oversight to nursing staff and the rotating surgical interns.

  • Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and / or consult with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization. Performs and participates in quality / performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Follow clinical protocols as necessary.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.

Additional

Job Description

Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care.

Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate. New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment.

Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR / AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
