VDOT's Lynchburg District, Mt. Airy Area Headquarter is seeking highly qualified Highway Maintenance Operators to join their maintenance team.
As the qualified candidate you will :
- Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance.
- Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributers, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc.
- Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
- Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road.
During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment to remove snow and ice, along with working in other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions.
Emergency response may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection. Safety is our number one focus, so you are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.

Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in roadway maintenance or construction
- Possess knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction
- Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoe, etc.
- Able to read and follow oral and written instructions
- Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
- Skilled in using hand and power tools
- Valid driver’s license required at hire
- A Commercial Driver’s License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.
VDOT is willing to assist with enrollment and payment of a CDL course
- Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications.
Additional Considerations
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements at time of hire
- Experience in heavy equipment operation
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
- Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
- Experience in heavy equipment operation
