Accordingly, we seek an outstanding educator at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor (non-tenure track) in Reading and Literacy Education, with expertise in elementary / early literacy, to join the program in Literacy and Reading Education within the Department of Learning and Teaching and the GSE’s award-winning Urban Social Justice Teacher Education program.

Major Responsibilities : The successful candidate will assume an active role as a full-time member of the Reading / Literacy Education program and the GSE community.

The scholar filling this position will support the coordination of Reading and Early Literacy Specialist programs, teach 18 credits of Reading / Literacy methods or other education courses per calendar year, and recruit and mentor students in the program, and assess the effectiveness of the program for accreditation purposes and participate in the accreditation processes.

  • The ideal candidate will work with colleagues in the GSE and other Rutgers departments to establish a university-wide and statewide presence in K-12 reading across New Jersey;
  • work with colleagues in the GSE to strategically align reading / literacy courses and programs with the urban social justice mission of the GSE through program development and grant writing;
  • and present evidence-based practical workshops at local and statewide conferences. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in program development and innovation, develop courses in topics related to literacy education;

and maintain and further develop a community of reading / literacy educators and graduates of the program, and expand it to include teachers from GSE Community School Partnership Network.

This candidate will also engage in general service to the department of Learning and Teaching and to the GSE

The successful candidate’s teaching and programmatic responsibilities will be in CAEP accredited advanced licensure programs designed for experienced teachers becoming reading specialists, supervisors, coaches, and interventionists at the MA, Ed.

D. and Ph.D. levels, with some responsibility within the GSE’s Award-Winning Urban, Social Justice Teacher Education program.

This work requires participation in national CAEP program accreditation, state regulatory processes, and outreach to schools and other partner organizations.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the innovation and growth of these programs.

Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in elementary literacy education and have a demonstrated commitment to equity-focused teaching and service.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in theory and research related to literacy instruction, and have extensive experience teaching reading in elementary school or as a coach / interventionist dealing with developmental reading and diagnosis of reading difficulties.

Additionally, the successful candidate must have experience and expertise in literacy assessment, individualized instruction, language development, and / or evidence-based reading / writing instruction;

and have evidence of innovative practices that advance issues of diversity, access, and social justice in education.The ideal candidate will have experience working in and with schools and / or community-based organizations serving linguistically, culturally, racially, ethnically, and economically diverse communities.

We are especially interested in applications from individuals who are members of groups that have been and still are underrepresented in university faculty positions.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Earned doctoral degree specializing in reading or literacy;
  • A minimum of five years of teaching literacy at the elementary school level;
  • Practical experience supporting reading development in K-6 schools and / or in clinical settings; and
  • Experience in schools and communities serving children with diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
