About the Job

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology of the University of Minnesota Medical School seeks a clinical faculty member to serve as Director of the HLA / Transplant Immunology Laboratory.

Academic rank, compensation and appointment type will be based on qualifications and experience. Candidates must have demonstrated ability in teaching and in scholarly productivity.

  • Minimum requirements for an MD include eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Minnesota, board certification by the American Board for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and qualifications as Laboratory Director, Technical Supervisor and Clinical Consultant for the subspecialty Histocompatibility, under the 2024 CLIA Final Rule.
  • Board Certification in CP or AP / CP by the American Board of Pathology is also required.
  • Minimum requirements for a PhD include board certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) and qualifications as Laboratory Director, Technical Specialist and Clinical Consultant under the 2024 CLIA Final Rule.

This large laboratory program supports preeminent solid organ (kidney, heart, lung, pancreas, liver) and stem cell transplant programs for the University of Minnesota Medical Center as well as other metro and regional transplant programs including LifeSource, the organ procurement organization that serves communities in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and portions of Western Wisconsin.

The HLA / Transplant Immunology Laboratory is fully accredited in all areas of histocompatibility testing including DNA-based HLA class I and II typing, solid phase antibody testing, and cross matching.

The HLA / Transplant Immunology laboratory performs about 20,000 HLA antibody tests for pre-transplantation listing and post-transplant, donor-specific antibody monitoring, about 1,500 flow cytometric crossmatches, 1,400 virtual crossmatches and almost 9,000 HLA class 1 or class 2 typing by Real time-PCR, sequence-specific primers, sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe hybridization testing, and Sanger sequencing.

Sign-out responsibilities, on-call duties, resident supervision and conferences are shared with other members of the HLA / Transplant Immunology faculty.

Academic time will be used to pursue scholarly work in the candidate’s area of specialty / research experience with a goal of developing collaborative or independent, externally funded research.

Faculty will be active in their national organizations and foster an academic environment for medical students, residents and faculty.
