About the College / Unit / Department

The UGA Department of History (history.uga.edu) grants the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The department has a strong tradition of expertise in subjects ranging from early American to modern African American history, the Caribbean to the Middle East, early modern Europe to the modern U.

S. South, popular culture to foreign policy, religion to global capitalism. Faculty members have won numerous teaching and scholarly awards, including the Frederick Jackson Turner Award, Fulbright Awards, American Council of Learned Societies Fellowships, Guggenheim Fellowships, a Pulitzer Prize in History, a Bancroft Prize, a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award, and many others.

The Institute for Women's Studies (iws.uga.edu) provides a feminist, intersectional, and interdisciplinary perspective on women and gender.

Major areas of strength and growth include Black feminisms; transnational feminisms; gender, environment, medicine, and science;

and women's leadership. Administratively a program in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, IWS cooperates with departments of all schools and colleges at UGA in developing its curriculum and programming.

IWS offers an undergraduate major, minor, and LGBTQ certificate as well as a graduate certificate.
