Job Purpose
The Structures Estimator will support and work with preconstruction / business development staff in the review of project plans, requirements, and specifications.
The Structures Estimator will work with a team of several members (Sr. Estimators, Operations, PMs, Engineers, Owners, etc.
and shall manage all aspects of a pursuit (take-offs, cost estimation, sub / supplier solicitations, etc.) for various owners (DOT, Municipal, Government, Aviation, Railroad).
Although the primary functions will focus on Structures, responsibilities will also include roadway, grading aspects as well.
The Structures Estimator shall have extensive knowledge of construction means and methods, costs and engineering principles.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review & understand all bid documents (project plans, requirements, and specifications) and assess project risks.
- Prepare and submit RFI's as needed directly to the owner.
- Lead and work with a team of estimators to develop a large multidisciplinary estimate.
- Perform and Review accurate quantity takeoffs and materials pricing.
- Create organized and detailed cost estimates for labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor needs.
- Prepare bid packages and lead outreach efforts to subcontractors and suppliers.
- Review, compare, and analyze competitive subcontractor and supplier quotes to ensure complete scopes to be included in the estimate.
- Prepare and present estimates at various stages and different types of procurement (i.e Conceptual, Schematic, and Design-Build, Bid-Build, etc.)
- Evaluate projects for value-engineering opportunities.
- Work closely with MW operations (Structures, Paving, Equipment, QC, Surveying) as appropriate to develop competitive advantages and assist with overall estimate development.
- Understand project logistics and project schedule.
- Assist with development of preliminary bid schedules.
- Submit final proposals to project owners.
- Perform certain post-bid buyouts and / or budget development.
- Perform pre-construction duties and meetings with Clients, Owners, and Engineers including participating in Pre-bid meeting and site visits.
- Prepare for and actively participate in Estimating meetings (be prepared to lead discussions on potential new pursuits with summaries on risk, success potential, and resource availability).
- Proposal content development and technical writing, as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications
- BS in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar applicable field experience as a substitution preferred.
- 5 years experience as a Project Manager, Estimator or equivalent preferred.
- Private and public works sector experience preferred.
- Experience with Bridges, CIP Concrete, Cranes, Foundations (piling).
- Effective presentation skills.
- Proficient computer skills including MS Office, estimating software (HCSS preferred), BlueBeam, electronic solicitation software (PipelineSuite is a plus), and scheduling software.
Knowledge of Agtek is a plus.
- Strong work ethic and ability to manage work schedule independently to hit deadlines.
- Must be highly organized.
- Design-Build or CMGC experience is a plus.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to pass background check for access to airports, railroads, and military bases.
Working Conditions
Primarily a controlled office environment with travel to various jobsites / conferences as necessary. Structures Estimator will be based out of our St.
Charles, Missouri office.
