Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist - Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Laboratory for Musculoskeletal Crosstalk

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Non-Faculty Academic Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist position in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Laboratory for Musculoskeletal Crosstalk run by Dr. Kelsey Collins.

In the Collins lab, we leverage interdisciplinary approaches in bioengineering, endocrinology, and physiology to determine molecular mechanisms of tissue crosstalk in osteoarthritis.

The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the molecular, cellular, and tissue biology activities of the laboratory by participating in induced pluripotent stem cell culture, editing of cell lines, histology, animal husbandry and others.

They will also independently perform more complex biological analyses using new and established approaches, and support the development of new protocols and application of spatial transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to musculoskeletal and adipose tissues.

The position requires someone who can contribute to an independent project while working in a team-based environment. The incumbant will participate in animal handling, record keeping, data management, communication with laboratory and Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) staff, molecular analyses of genotype, and data interpretation.

Required Qualifications :

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in bioengineering, stem cell or molecular biology, immunology or a related field or at least four years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a master's degree in bioengineering, stem cell or molecular biology, immunology or a related field or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a master's degree in bioengineering, stem cell or molecular biology, immunology or a related field) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
  • Robust Molecular biology skills.
  • Cell culture expertise.
  • Primary cell culture experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and communication skills.
  • Strong skills in attention to detail.
  • Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • A collaborative spirit and are comfortable with working in teams.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and / or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Interest in or experience with using mouse models or stem cells preferred.
  • Histology and immunohistochemistry experience, orthopaedic research experience preferred.
  • Coursework in statistics preferred.
  • Interest in conducting pain and behavioral testing on rodents is a plus.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities.

Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
