Description
Under general direction of the Cath Lab Manager, Director of Cardiac Services and Cath Lab Medical Director, the Electrophysiology Technician renders individualized patient care.
Patient care assignments include patient care, functioning as a scrub assistant to the physician for all diagnostic and intervention electrophysiology procedures.

- Performs the duties and assumes the responsibilities of a Cardiovascular Technician I in addition to behaviors defined below.
- Admits patients pre procedure and appropriately assesses and prepares them for procedure.
- Prepares the room, trays, procedures and patients according to physician preference cards.
- Assists with physician querying to acquire or clarify necessary medical record documentation to facilitate accurate and complete coding and abstraction in support of clinical quality documentation.
- Assists in cleaning and preparing the rooms for procedures to follow.
- Practices aseptic technique in opening sterile drape packs, catheters, equipment and supplies.
- Answers the telephone promptly and courteously and relays calls / messages to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
- Assists other team members by offering assistance to distribute the workload.
Department Specific Competencies
Assists with Electrophysiology and RF ablations; operates electrophysiology computer, amplifiers, ablation unit and stimulators;
measures intervals and identifies changes.
- Mentors and trains staff in use of electrophysiology equipment.
- Assists with orienting new Cardio Vascular Technician to department, equipment, and routines.
- Assists supervisor in updating policy and procedures relative to Electrophysiology.
- Cleanses skin immediately following procedure and applies dressings to puncture sites.
- Practices aseptic technique in opening sterile drape packs, catheters, equipment and supplies.
- Adheres to infection prevention guidelines : washes hands according to policy / procedure observes isolation policies cleans equipment according to directions between patients ensuring appropriate time and contact with disinfectants disposes of infectious waste properly
- Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures; regularly practices aseptic techniques and strictly obeys isolation and infection control procedures;
prevents cross contamination during procedures.
- Monitors patients ECG, blood pressure, arterial and right heart pressures and oxygen saturation readings.
- Communicates and assists in maintaining department equipment by : Removing broken equipment per policy, alerting appropriate resources of faulty / broken equipment, assuring management is aware of problem and action taken.
Checks and refills supplies, identifies if last item is used.
Education
Additional Information Arrhythmia recognition and 12-lead EKG course or equivalent.
