At Houston Methodist the Manager Nursingposition is responsible for 24hour comprehensive operationalresponsibility for the delivery and quality of patient careprovided in the designated areas(s) of responsibility.

Thisregistered nurse position fostersinterdepartmental / interprofessional collaboration. The ManagerNursing position participates in committees representing unit andNursing in a positive manner.

The position assists with developingand implementing performance initiatives ensuring optimal patientsafety outcomes and customer satisfaction.

This positiondemonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking throughselfdirection initiative effective interpersonal skills andoral / written communications skills.

The managerposition responsibilities include managing the daily workactivities of the work unit / department staff ensuring qualityproductivity functional excellence and efficiency while assistingmanagement in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives.

In addition this position provides guidance to staff and isresponsible for staffing budget compliance contributing to staffingdecisions such as hiring and terminating employment coaching andcounseling employees on work related performance and assisting inthe development and implementation of policies and procedures toensure a safe and effective work environment.

This position alsoimplements training monitoring and operations initiatives thatsecure compliance with ethical and legal business practices andaccreditation / regulatory / government regulations.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Performsmanagement responsibilities of selection scheduling supervisionretention and evaluation of employees in the department.

Providesdevelopment and mentoring of staff. Meets or exceeds threshold goalfor department turnover. Develops direct reports to perform thesesame functions.

Providesfair and consistent leadership and communication to maintain acompetent and engaged employee group by conducting regulardepartment meetings to review policies and procedures andoperational matters rounding on all employees completingperformance appraisals conducting new hire feedback sessionscoaching / corrective counseling and providingrecognition / commendations to achieve desired outcomes.

Providestimely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specificknowledge / skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve aproblem.

  • Facilitates andpromotes effective team dynamics and teambuilding strategies withinand between departments; participates and / or leads and facilitatesdepartment process improvements asneeded.
  • Meets or exceedsthreshold goal for department and / or system metrics on employeeengagement indicators : action readiness score tierlevel.
  • Establisheseffective two way communication with staff demonstrating activelistening requesting and acknowledging feedback making equitabledecisions providing rationale when appropriate and supportingorganizational goals.

Coaches staff to use efficient and effectivecommunication to establish and maintain a team environment and toinclude the patient and family as a part of the team regardingtheir plan of care.

Assists staff with stress managementpractices.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plansand organizes daytoday department operations schedule andactivities. Sets priorities and functional standards givingdirection to staff as necessary to ensure the best possibledelivery of service and high customer / patientsatisfaction.
  • Drivesdepartment service standards and activities to impact departmentand / or system score for patient / customerbased satisfaction throughrole modeling and fostering accountability.

Serves and activelyparticipates on various entity committees as a voice for thedepartment.

  • Serves as rolemodel to staff reinforcing principles of service orientation andensuring that the focus is always on improving patient care and / orservices effectively resolve concerns complaints or conflict withpatients families physicians and other interprofessional healthcare team members taking appropriate action and channeling concernsaccording to appropriateprocedures.
  • Maintainsongoing interactions with patients families physicians and staff onhow to improve patient care and service provided.

Practices in amanner that is congruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensuresa safe and effective working environment; monitors and / or revisesthe department safety plan and / or any specificaccreditation / regulatory required safety guidelines includinginfection control principles.

Monitors and confirms staff maintaintheir required credentials that demonstrate competency peraccrediting agency or department guidelines asapplicable.

  • Uses andoptimizes information systems to enhance operations; supportsentityspecific performance improvement and data management / analysisfunctions.
  • Employs aproactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes bymonitoring and improving the department workflow using peertopeeraccountability reporting near misses and / or adverse eventsimmediately and identifying solutions via collaboration.

Adoptslean principles in driving process improvements. Role modelssituational awareness using teachable moments to improvesafety.

Monitors self andemployee compliance with policies procedures and System HRStandards of Practice and performs associated actions uponnoncompliance (i.

Prepares measurablegoals and objectives that are consistent with Houston Methodistpriorities and develops action plans for achieving goalsincorporating collaborative efforts whenappropriate.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assistsin the development of department budget and ensures that thedepartment operates in a cost effective manner. Manages / auditsdepartment expenses within approved budget parameters ensuring thatthe department meets the budgeted / flex revenue and / or expensetargets on a monthly and annual basis.

Develops staffing plans andschedules to meet department / patient care needs that reflectunderstanding of the importance ofcosteffectiveness.

  • Implementsdepartment strategies to achieve financial target and staffingneeds developing others to do the same through optimizingproductivity supply / resource efficiency minimizing incidentalovertime and overtime percentage and other areas according todepartmentspecifications.
  • Planscoverage of unit to maximize presence of management and staff.Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet department / patientcare needs that reflect understanding of the importance ofcosteffectiveness.

  • Identifies andimplements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes toimprove department operations or other departmentspecific measuresby leading unit projects and / or other department / system directedshared governance activities.
  • Supports change initiativesmaintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in workresponsibilities or environment;

adjusts effectively to work withinnew work structures processes requirements orcultures.

Proactivelyevaluates processes; recommends and implements action plan(s) forchange; follows through to ensure effective sustainable change.

Participates in the development and implementation of newprocedures and the review and revision of existingprocedures.

Completes and updates the individualdevelopment plan (IDP) on an ongoing basis. Conducts conversationswith staff on their development andIDP.

EDUCATION

Bachelorsdegree or higher inNursing

WORKEXPERIENCE

Three yearsexperience in nursing one year in a progressive leadership role inhealthcare; for HM internal two years experience in nursing whichincludes HM performance that demonstrates leadership abilities i.

e.charge nurse responsibilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • RN Registered NurseTexas State Licensure and / or Compact State Licensure within 90 daysor
  • RNTemp Registered Nurse Temporary StateLicensure within 90 days and
  • BLS Basic LifeSupport (AHA) and
  • Magnet ANCC RecognizedCertification If at HMH must have an ANCCrecognized leadershipcertification within 1 year and
  • Othercredentials and certifications as defined by unit / service line
