The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, dba UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA), seeks a dynamic and innovative faculty leader to serve as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (Open Rank) in the Office for Undergraduate Medical Education in the Joe R.

Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM). UTHSA strives to combine scientific discovery with clinical care in innovative and transformative ways, and educating learners is core to this mission.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs is responsible for the student affairs program including academic advisement, student progression, student conduct, and career counseling.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise students regarding : student progression, promotion, disciplinary measures (academic and professional), leaves of absence, academics, professional identity formation, career choice, and / or personal concern
  • Recommend, develop, and implement policies, procedures, and processes that represent best practices in : fostering and promoting student learning, retention, and success;
  • responding to reports of harassment, misconduct, and mistreatment in coordination with the appropriate University offices;

and applying FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX, ADA and LCME accreditation requirements

  • Attend to student due process and resultant documentation
  • Serve as a key liaison between the Office for UME and student-related University offices and services, including programmatic and ad hoc committees and working groups
  • Lead or participate in the design, management, and execution of academic and career advisement programming for students
  • Provide mentoring and support for professional development of direct reports
  • Assist in the oversight, training, and development of student leadership programs
  • Assist in the supervision and coordination of undergraduate medical education milestone events
  • Represent the student affairs program in organizations, task forces or related consortia at local, regional, state, and national levels
  • Facilitate and engage in scholarly activity related to student affairs and medical education
  • Maintain an understanding of crisis management and serve as an advocate and point of contact for medical students regarding sensitive and confidential matters, counseling, and intervention efforts
  • Develop and implement strategies and plans in cases of student emergencies. Ensures plans are consistent and compliant with other University policies.

Qualifications

  • MD, DO, PhD, or EdD degree (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of five () years of leadership experience in undergraduate medical education (, course or clerkship director)
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the School of Medicine and the University
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and adapt to changing priorities and needs required with professionalism and diplomacy
  • Familiarity with state and federal laws pertaining to student and patient rights, privacy, and safety (, FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX, and ADA)
  • Strong commitment to the University's mission and values in creating a supportive learning environment that builds community among the student body and faculty
  • Ability to identify and support the needs of all student populations

Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions.

ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.

Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options :

Front-loaded Paid Time Off : to hours ( to days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year.

PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.

Extended Illness Bank : hours ( day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.

Paid Family Leave : Up to hours ( weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after months of consecutive employment.

Holidays : set paid holidays each year plus three floating holidays, which can be used anytime during the fiscal year.

FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.
