Our Center for Translational Vision Research at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute serves as an international leader in advancing research and bolstering the support of investigators pursuing basic and translational sciences relevant to vision.
We are bringing together exceptional scientific expertise from within the University, the School of Medicine and other schools, and complementary research programs to advance collaborations that focus on fundamental discoveries in vision research with translational potential.
We aim to integrate basic and clinical research, including genetics and pharmacology, in order to develop innovative and accessible therapies for millions robbed of their sight or progressing toward blindness.
Responsibilities :
The Center for Translational Vision Research (CTVR) at the University of California, Irvine, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced ORU Manager of Laboratory Operations and Compliance.
This pivotal role will oversee the comprehensive management of laboratory operations within our newly designated Organized Research Unit (ORU).
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the effective and compliant operation of our research laboratories, including managing staff, equipment, and regulatory requirements.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following :
Program Administration Administers a small to mid-sized research program with primary responsibility for coordinating administrative and programmatic activities.
Ensures alignment with the Center’s goals and oversees the smooth operation of lab functions, maintaining high standards for research productivity and compliance.
Research Staff Management and Lab Operations
Manages research staff, ensuring that laboratory research experiments are conducted in line with established objectives, quality standards, and timelines.
Oversees daily lab operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines. Facilitates effective collaboration within the lab and with external partners.
Regulatory Compliance and Issue Resolution
Independently resolves administrative, operational, and compliance issues, maintaining consistency with university policies and research protocols.
Ensures that all laboratory practices adhere to institutional, federal, and state regulations. Manages Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, ensuring all required approvals are obtained and maintained.
Lab Management and Oversight
Manages individual labs of each faculty belonging to the Center. Oversees the maintenance and operation of mice colonies, ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations.
Coordinates with faculty on lab needs and supports their research objectives.
Equipment Management
Oversees the entire lifecycle of laboratory equipment, including purchasing, maintenance, and repair. Assists with NIH P30 core equipment management, ensuring equipment is properly maintained and utilized according to grant requirements.
Manages inventory and ensures the availability of necessary resources for ongoing research.
Funding and Revenue Development
Collaborates with program leadership to identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants and other revenue streams.
Engages in grant writing, proposal development, and funding applications to secure financial resources that support the program's growth and sustainability.
Financial Management
Participates in budgeting and accounting processes to establish and maintain a robust financial infrastructure. Works with the Director and financial team to monitor expenses, track budgets, and ensure effective use of resources in line with program objectives.

Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to carry out assigned tasks reliably with general direction
Teaching and communication skills necessary for interactions with principal investigators, undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, researchers, clinical faculty, physicians, and external visitors / guests.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Extensive experience in laboratory management, including regulatory compliance and equipment oversight.
