Department

Elementary Education and Literacy

About MSU Denver

Established in 1965, Metropolitan State University (MSU Denver) was founded to serve students who were underrepresented in higher education whose life paths and experiences did not fit the traditional mold. Sixty years later, the University continues to serve over 16,000 of Colorado's extraordinary and diverse students, providing them with the foundation on which to build their unique aspirations. As the third largest public institution of higher education in Colorado, MSU Denver is a model university for today's college students.

Proud of its federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution that also offers graduate programs (gHSI) and the only Seal of Excelencia certified institution in Colorado. The University serves the most diverse undergraduate student population in the state, as well as the most first-generation students. Through affordable, flexible, and holistic education, MSU Denver helps students build essential skills grounded in a multicultural and global perspective that lead to undergraduate and graduate degrees, and career and life success.

About the Department

The Elementary Education and Literacy Department is a community of educators committed to care, social justice, intellectual engagement, professional uplift, joy, and critical reflection. We offer a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education-with or without Colorado Initial Teaching Licensure-and five concentration options. Students may also pursue licensure endorsements in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education or Spanish CLD Bilingual Education. At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Arts in Teaching with Colorado Initial Licensure.

Our programs prepare future educators to thrive in diverse educational settings through research-informed literacy and math instruction, powerful social studies and science teaching, trauma-informed practices, equity and inquiry-based pedagogy, and strong clinical experiences.

Position Summary

The Department of Elementary Education & Literacy at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) invites applications for a renewable 10-month contract as a full-time lecturer to begin in January 2026. The ideal candidate would be a former educator with experience either teaching and / or supervising pre-service teachers in a university setting. The department is particularly interested in applicants who have experience building and maintaining university and K-12 school partnerships and coaching pre-service teachers in a yearlong residency model. This model is unique to the department and MSU Denver in that it requires students to complete a yearlong clinical experience during the final year of their program. The residency model is a practice-based approach to teacher preparation that integrates coursework, coaching, and clinical experience. This model creates space for pre-service teachers to work closely with a Mentor Teacher, University Supervisor, and Site Coordinator for an intensive yearlong coaching experience that will ensure they are well prepared for entering the teaching profession on day one.

This position requires the equivalent of 15 credits per semester divided up into 5 areas of focus :

  • (a) elementary residency site coordinator,
  • (b) elementary residency supervisor,
  • (c) teaching at least one course,
  • (d) student success coaching, and
  • (e) additional duties assigned.

For the first area, the candidate will work as a site coordinator within the elementary yearlong residency-a leadership position within the residency program that requires building and maintaining district and school partnerships. The candidate will also serve as a university supervisor in a coaching role with students placed in a variety of partnership schools across the Denver metropolitan area. For the third area, the candidate will teach at least one course within the undergraduate or graduate elementary education program offered either in the day or evening each semester with a potential focus on the following topics : (a) foundational understanding of the teaching profession, (b) instructional models, (c) assessment practices, and (d) differentiated learning environments. Summer teaching opportunities may be available depending on departmental needs and student demand. Lastly, the candidate will provide personalized, holistic support (i.e., success coaching) in ensuring students thrive academically, personally, and professionally. Other responsibilities include participating in professional development, attending department and site coordinator meetings, informing course and program development, and student advising.

The University is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for underrepresented groups. Metropolitan State University of Denver is an equal opportunity employer.

MSU Denver is a unique, access-oriented campus community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are a designated Hispanic Serving Institution located in downtown Denver. Our student population consists of nearly 50% first-generation students and over 45% students of ethnic / racial minority backgrounds.

It requires critical inquiry and dialogue and a commitment to action. We strive to provide a culture of belonging where all community members feel valued to achieve personal and professional success.
