Job Description and Duties

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources Department, is accepting applications for at least two (2) Permanent, Full-Time Automotive Equipment Operator I (AEOI) or Truck Driver positions in the Motor Pool department.

A Training and Development opportunity may also be considered. This position is under the direct supervision of the Automotive Pool Manager I.

  • The AEOI is responsible for loading, unloading, and delivering various patient and hospital related items such as food, clean and dirty laundry, personal care items, patient property, postal packages, warehouse supplies, State property and equipment;
  • and other correlated items; transporting patients throughout the secured areas of the hospital utilizing a 24-passenger bus;
  • operating a refuse packer (trash truck) for the purpose of collecting refuse and recycling items throughout the hospital and delivering to the local landfill and recycling center;
  • conducting office moves, set-ups / take-downs for hospital special events, and other hospitals needs as required; completes daily pre-trip inspections and maintains applicable logs;

and operating, servicing, fueling, washing, and vacuuming passenger vehicles, light trucks, box trucks, refrigerated food trucks, refuse packer, transportation bus, and other automotive equipment.

The Truck Driver position is responsible to perform these same duties except for the operation of vehicles which require a commercial driver license with applicable endorsements.

  • Candidates applying for the AEOI position must possess and maintain a valid Class B California Commercial Driver License with an Air Brake Endorsement to operate the Trash and Food Trucks and a Passenger Endorsement to drive the patient bus equipped to transport fifteen (15) or more passengers;
  • have experience in operating a box truck, passenger vehicle, forklift, and similar motorized equipment; loading and unloading vehicles correctly and safely;

performing minor adjustments and repairs to trucks and vehicles; good mechanical ability; and will be subject to random drug / alcohol screenings regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Candidates applying for the Truck Driver position must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Commercial Driver License with desirable experience in operating a box truck, passenger vehicle, forklift, and similar motorized equipment;

loading and unloading vehicles correctly and safely; performing minor adjustments and repairs to trucks and vehicles; and have good mechanical ability.

All candidates must have the capability of following directions, possess a true understanding of posted speed limits in patient occupied grounds, hospital security regulations, and Motor Vehicle Codes pertaining to the operation of vehicles on public road.

The Motor Pool Department operates seven days a week. Successful Candidate must be available to work any shift in a variety of settings throughout the hospital.

May also be required to work overtime and float to other work locations determined by the operational needs of the hospital.

A drug screen must be passed prior to hiring.

Working Conditions

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area.

The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.
