Job Title : Registered Nurse (RN) Job Specialty : Medical Surgical Job Duration : 13 weeks Shift : 12-hour Days Guaranteed Hours : 36 hours per week Experience : Minimum of 2 years License : Required to submit Certifications : BLS, ACLS Must-Have : - Solid experience as an RN - Experience in a level 1 trauma center or a very large medical center with numerous surgeries / high acuity patients preferred - Comfortable with managing lines and chest tubes - EPIC charting experience required Job Description : - The unit typically has a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 : 5, which may adjust to 1 : 6, with ratios adjusted down for higher acuity patients.
Common patient diagnoses include infectious diseases, with the unit also handling medical-surgical overflow. - RN responsibilities include the titration of drips such as heparin;
other drips like amiodarone might be started and then the patient transferred to the cardiac unit. - Patients are monitored on all units with tele capability.
The RN will be in communication with the central monitor station. - Charge nurses take on a light patient assignment and may handle a full load if necessary.
There is an educator and a manager assigned to each unit. - Respiratory therapies available include CPAP, BiPAP at night, and support from RT.
Scheduling options include 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Travelers are expected to fill scheduling gaps;
block scheduling may be accommodated based on departmental needs. - Weekend work is required every other weekend or two weekends per month, with flexibility based on departmental needs.
- Holiday requirements involve working at least three of the following six dates : Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, New Year's.
- No call or standby required. - RNs may float between all medical-surgical units within their skill set. - Professional attire in any solid color is required.
- Specific orientation includes paperwork, attestation, logins for Omnicel and Epic, an introductory tour of the unit, and scheduling discussions.
Two additional shifts with a preceptor are provided. - Charting is done using the Epic Systems Corporation's EpicCare Inpatient EMR Suite.
