Surgical ICU

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a key part of the Level I Trauma Center, safety net and tertiary care center of Denver Health. Patients come from throughout the region to be cared for in our 23-bed unit. The SICU is equipped with all the necessities, technology and emergency equipment for providing the full spectrum of care to the most critically ill and injured patients. Our patient population consists of critically ill or complex general surgery patients, as well as traumatically injured patients ages 15 years and older. The patient population in the SICU is 70-80% patients who have experienced a trauma. Most patients are suffering from injuries due to motor vehicle accidents, bicycle injuries, ski accidents, pedestrian versus auto encounters, traumatic brain injuries, falls, injuries from violent crimes and other serious traumatic events. The SICU's nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 : 2 with the most critical patients being cared for 1 : 1.

Job Summary

Under general supervision provides administrative support to the department. Serves as a resource to Managers and Directors, and Staff. Essential job duties include, but not limited to, daily management of Time & Attendance, bi-weekly payroll, new employee onboarding, and employee personnel file management. In addition, Project Coordinators contribute to the development, roll-out, and support of divisional initiatives and improvement projects on the unit or division as needed.

Essential Functions :

  • Reviews staffing sheets daily to ensure accurate coding of all staff time cards for employee payment and unit productivity (Sitter Usage, Education, Orientation Coding, FML, LOA). (15%)
  • Supports Denver Health Bi-Weekly payroll process, reviewing all time cards for accuracy. (15%)
  • Assists with maintenance of unit equipment and acquisition of new equipment. (15%)
  • Onboarding new employees based on department need, including the creation of new employee binders, activating nurse trackers, assigning mailbox and locker, and added new staff to internal documents, distribution lists, and reports. The same functions are supported when staff leaves the department and / or Denver Health. (10%)
  • Manage employee personnel files confirming that all documentation required by Joint Commission is up to date and organized based on DH / JC Standards. Maintain all staff medical files with adherence to DH / JC standards. (10%)
  • Produce reports for department KPIs, compile information and, at times, analyze and communicate results. (10%)
  • Place and manage engineering work orders and Help Desk tickets as requested by staff and managers. (5%)
  • Management of paper and electronic records; creation and management of spreadsheets and databases (Employee Emergency Call Down List, Team Assignment, Annual Evaluations, Outlook Distribution Lists, and more). (5%)
  • Perform and oversee special projects, including both divisional and unit-level projects. (5%)
  • Responsible for maintaining department Visual Management Boards with updated information, graphs and visuals. (5%)
  • Design and execute additional visual boards as needed, including employee engagement, education, and clinical excellence. (5%)

Education :

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Work Experience :

  • 1-3 years Three years clerical experience. Required
  • Licenses :

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Ability to provide general administrative and clerical support to leaders.
  • Knowledge of time and attendance tracking and editing practices.
  • Possesses excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in managing high volume workload from multiple leaders.
  • Ability to organize time in order to effectively manage simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed.
  • Ability to create, store, edit, format, print, and revise tables, reports, forms, labels, and other printed material using the available software.
  • Recognizes, initiates, leads, and evaluates improvement efforts through initiative, judgment, tact, and discretion.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and API or other time and attendance tracking software.
