Job Summary

The School of Medicine (SOM) Research Space Funding and Research Administration Project Manager will play a vital role in implementing the research space funding assessments across all departments and units within SOM.

Also, the incumbent will provide support to various RA strategic programs or initiatives that will help address critical gaps in RA services and / or training.

The primary focus of the position is to enable the advancement of Research Space Utilization via the enhancement of transparent research space assignments in order to help foster collaboration.

The second focus will be to help the RA unit ensure cohesive support across the research lifecycle to help support the academic success of SOM.

This position will require constant coordination with the SOM Office of Research (OR) units, SOM Dean's Office, Research Space Advisory Committee (RSAC), all SOM departments / units and other UCD units as needed. #CA-DC

This position will oversee the implementation of the research space funding assessment process in collaboration with the SOM Office of Research (OR) Research Operations and Research Space Oversight Units and SOM departments / units while supporting the Associate Dean of Infrastructure and Research space Advisory committee.

Additionally, assist RA in the facilitation of standardized policies, procedural consistency and providing essential support of SOM departments and units.

The immediate workload will be to partner with the SOM Office of Research (OR) Research Operations and Research Space Oversight Units to finalize the initial funding assessment process of all SOM departments / units.

In addition, help RA optimize the development of the RA training program as well as further cultivate a collaborative RA network that expands beyond SOM.

The primary functions include : complex space project management across multiple departments, managing the portfolio of the space moves for the SOM and implementing related facilities projects, including equipment related to an expanded biorepository initiative.

Secondary functions include assisting in the project management of the RA unit various initiatives, serving as a back-up to the centralized pre-award shared service division, and assisting with the development of the Research Administration Training Program.

This position utilizes project management skills and tools to lead complex research space funding assessments. This includes an expert level of understanding of research cores that are necessary to support investigators maximizing eciency for their programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience of increasingly responsible business management experience to manage and oversee a complex and diverse group of units or programs
  • Experience creating targeted marketing programs
  • Experience performing analysis and recommendations to leadership
  • Experience with the development of organizational structures, delegating, developing policies and procedures and implementation
  • Experience in common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs (Tableau, Cayuse, Microsoft Office Suite, FacilitiesLink, NIH Reporter and others as needed)
  • Profound knowledge of the field of academic medical research, research space, research funding and research trends
  • Requires superior knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts. Has a thorough understanding of how programs relate to other business strategies and initiatives.

Demonstrated ability to integrate critical information across disciplines

  • Quantitative and analytical skills to prepare various reports, and to interpret reports prepared by others
  • Contract negotiations and confidentiality agreements experience, including account management experience
  • Effective executive skills, superior customer service, and proven ability to build executive-level partnerships

  • Expert knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs

  • Knowledge of and skills to implement principles of performance management, multiculturalism and diversity, coaching skills to enhance staff contributions
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
  • Knowledge of research administration principles; both pre and post award
  • Knowledge of training program development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in Business Administration
  • Knowledge of University policy and procedures in all areas pertinent to academic departments and programs

Department Overview

The School of Medicine Office of Research (SOM OR), with an annual operating budget of approximately $10M, acts under the direction of the SOM Vice Dean for Research.

SOM OR manages research safety, grant facilitation, and supports investigators across the SOM and the UC Davis Main Campus who perform biomedical research.

In FY23, the School of Medicine received $401 M in extramural grants and contracts. The SOM oversees over 340,000 ASF of space in Sacramento and Davis with another 150,000 ASF being added in the upcoming three years.

UC Davis SOM is a highly-ranked research institution and investigators collaborate with many disciplines throughout the campus.

By supporting research funding assessments and administration throughout the SOM, the incumbent will play a key role in supporting UCD SOM research.

Department Specific Job Scope

The SOM Research Space Assessment Initiative represents a high degree of complexity across the entire organization, as SOM spans basic / translational / and clinical research in Sacramento and Davis in owned and leased facilities that expand beyond SOM space.

This position will be hired into the School of Medicine but works across the entire UC Davis organization. This role is essential for advancing research capabilities within the SOM and will significantly contribute to fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence in research.
