The Department is seeking a Boating and Diving Safety Officer with extensive experience in marine operations, including support of marine scientific techniques, boating and diving operations, and field safety training.
This role serves as the subject matter expert in boating and diving safety for HMS. This role also develops, implements, and monitors boating and diving safety programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, nationally recognized guidelines, and Stanford policy.
50% Boating Support
- Works closely with faculty, students, and staff to safely facilitate their scientific & educational activities in, on, and from marine vessels.
- Makes technical decisions on when major repairs, upgrades, replacement, and specialized fabrication are needed.
- Creates and maintains a BSM (Boating Safety Manual).
- Operates, services, maintains, and repairs Stanford owned marine equipment and supplies.
- Provides training, technical advice, and support as needed.
- Ensures operations, policies, and procedures are conducted according to federal, state, and Stanford regulations.
- Organizes and performs equipment checkouts.
- Trains and certifies eligible candidates to operate vessels according to Stanford’s Boating Safety Manual.
25% Diving Support
- Coordinates use of HMS diving facilities with visiting diving groups.
- Develops & implements scientific diving guidelines, operations, equipment, and procedures.
- Works closely with faculty, students, and staff to safely facilitate and monitor their diving work.
- Operates, services, maintains, and repairs diving equipment.
- Ensures diving operations are current with community best practices.
- Trains and certifies scientific divers according to Stanford and the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) research diving safety standards.
15% Other Facilities & Administrative Support
- Coordinates access through HMS property for use of shoreline by visiting researchers.
- Reviews applications for all types of refuge usage and works with the refuge committee as needed.
10% Health & Safety & Training
- Conducts inspection of vessels, trailers, and safety equipment as required.
- Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.
- Participates as a member of the incident response team.
CORE DUTIES AND COMPETENCIES :
- Work under self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures associated with the Boating Safety Program.
- Act as subject matter expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of the Boating Safety Program.
- Conduct comprehensive compliance assurance reviews of the Boating Safety Program.
- Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards.
To be successful in this position, you will need :
- Bachelor’s degree and three years related experience in facilities management such as Boating Safety Programs, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Analytical skills to analyze and track complex data.
- Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a broad range of people.
- Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
Certifications and Licenses :
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the State of California.
- CA Safe Boating certification, or ability to obtain and maintain.
- USCG 50-Ton Captain’s License, or ability to obtain and maintain.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
May be exposed to noise >
80dB TWA.
May be working at heights 4 - 10 ft.
The expected pay range for this position is $66,560 to $98,000 per annum.
