Position Summary
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure system or fixed-term faculty appointment in animal welfare science at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor, depending on qualifications and experience.
The position will incorporate a mix of teaching, research, outreach, and academic service responsibilities. The teaching responsibilities involve delivering comprehensive, species-spanning animal welfare and behavior education throughout our professional veterinary curriculum.
This includes the design and development of animal welfare course content, courses, and mentoring students in animal welfare projects.
The role also entails advising our veterinary student team in the Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging and Assessment Contest.
The research duties are to conduct independent and / or collaborative research that is relevant to the college and our stakeholders and becomes recognized both nationally and internationally for its contributions to advancing animal welfare.
The college has three internal departments : Large Animal Clinical Science, Small Animal Clinical Sciences, and Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation.
The research direction of the successful candidate will determine in which of these departments she / he / they will be appointed.

Required Degree
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (PhD and / or DVM / VMD) or equivalent in animal welfare, a related animal science field, or veterinary medicine with relevant specialization.
Example of a PhD equivalent include a DSc, and examples of a DVM / VMD equivalent include a BVSc, BVSC, BVetMed, BVM&S, and BVMS.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in animal welfare, a related animal science field, or veterinary medicine with relevant specialization.
A strong commitment to effective and innovative instruction in animal welfare across various species is essential, as is a record of research productivity and mentoring trainees that is commensurate with career stage.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are required, along with proven ability to collaborate within team settings and create an equitable and inclusive environment.

Desired Qualifications
A doctoral degree in veterinary medicine with relevant specialty training and certification is an asset. A record of developing curricular content that weaves animal welfare throughout a veterinary medical curriculum is desired, as is evidence of collaborative or interdisciplinary research that directly advances animal welfare.
Demonstrated experience leading diverse and inclusive teams, mentoring excellence, or contributing to scholarship of teaching are assets.
