SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, provides installation, repair and maintenance service on commercial packaging and kitchen appliances and equipment, including trouble-shooting appliances and equipment, ordering and maintaining inventory stock, and lead activities of assigned personnel.
Incumbent performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Nutrition Services Appliance Technician II classification differs from the Nutrition Services Appliance Technician I classification in that the former acts in a lead capacity and performs appliance technician functions that are more technical and complex in nature.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITES
Trouble-shoots appliances and equipment to increase operating efficiency and to meet safety requirements. Installs or repairs commercial kitchen and packaging appliances and equipment, such as dishwashers, disposals, ovens, freezers and refrigeration units, can openers, cutters and slicers, and other electrical and mechanical devices.
Installs or repairs electrical motors and fixtures. Recommends equipment and appliance replacement as needed.
Implements preventative-maintenance programs and schedules; performs routine maintenance activities on appliances and equipment according to schedules;
instructs food service personnel in proper equipment cleaning, operations, minor repairs and safety procedures.
Requisitions and maintains an inventory of parts and supplies needed in performing emergency repair and maintenance duties;
receives, categorizes and stores parts and supplies.
Functions in a lead capacity in evaluating repair and maintenance activities of assigned personnel. Maintains detailed parts usage records and maintenance schedules.
Provides training to new staff; upholds standards of Nutrition Services and promotes a cohesive team environment.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education / Experience : Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be :
- 1. Equivalent to a high school diploma;
- 2. Completion of a recognized training course in commercial kitchen appliance repair;
- 3. Five years of progressively responsible experience in commercial kitchen appliance and equipment repair and installation;
boilers, general building maintenance, heating, cooling and refrigeration of stationary and mobile systems.
Knowledge of : Reading, writing in English and mechanical math; electricity, electronics, plumbing, refrigeration, gas and arc welding principles and procedures;
building codes and safety codes and procedures; computer skills.
- Skill at and Ability to : Read, write, follow and execute complex verbal and written instructions in English; complete reports and communications via a computer, drawings, blueprints and diagrams;
- using hand and power tools; operating a variety of testing equipment and meters; arc, mig and gas welding; trouble-shooting electrical, refrigeration, mechanical and plumbing problems;
light carpentry; working under difficult time deadlines; maintaining related documentation, records and reports. Ability to coordinate function in a lead capacity and evaluate maintenance projects.
Licenses / Certificates : Possession of a Certified Refrigeration Technician license.
Physical Demands : The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces;
recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters and record boxes.
The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average ability and dexterity.
Work Environment : The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines;
exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.
