B.E.S.T. Mentors guide first-year students of color to make a successful transition from high school to college. They work with the program director and GA to foster an inclusive cohort of mentees, connect them to campus resources, assist with the required INTD150 B.
E.S.T. class, meet with the students individually or in groups to build a positive relationship with their assigned mentees, plan and host monthly social events, and attend weekly mentor meetings.
Therefore, they must have a broad knowledge of the BSU services and programs provided for all students at BSU. B.E.S.T. Mentors must be good communicators, patient, welcoming, approachable, tolerant of ambiguity, and interested in working with students from diverse backgrounds.
B.E.S.T. Mentors must always conduct themselves professionally. This includes punctuality for meetings / class, wearing appropriate clothing, wearing nametags, working collaboratively with other mentors and GA, fulfilling all job responsibilities, interacting positively with students, and families, etc.
They must prioritize the position as a job and report any schedule conflicts to their supervisor.
- Full-time BSU students with good conduct and academic standing. At least two consecutive semesters at BSU before serving as a mentor.
- Excellent customer service.
- Knowledge of BSU and LGCIE resources, programs, and student success services offered to students.
- Provide information, and answer questions about multicultural student experiences at BSU.
- Commitment to diversity equity and inclusion and promoting LGCIE to other students.
- Past involvement in academic and / or co-curricular programs.
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong interest in learning about different cultures and diversity topics.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, social media sites, and Canva to create marketing materials for the program, etc.
