FASD United (formerly the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or NOFAS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit public health advocacy organization and the national voice on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).
FASD United serves individuals living with FASD and seeks to educate systems of care and the public, enact policies, and unite communities everywhere.
This is a temporary position covering for a leave of absence anticipated to run through December 2024.
Job Summary :
The Accountant will prepare financial reports to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities using QuickBooks Online.
The preferred work location is in our offices in Washington, DC, however remote or hybrid candidates will be considered.
Duties / Responsibilities :
- Performs general ledger accounting and other related duties in the accounting department.
- Prepares periodic (monthly, quarterly, annual) balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements, along with supplementary reports as needed.
- Maintains the general ledger in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Prepares ad hoc financial analyses as required.
- Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
- Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
- Reconciles customer accounts and manages accounts receivable collections.
- Verifies payment of approved invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.
- Provides external auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.
- Files required tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
- As appropriate, coordinates with software vendor to maintain accounting software system; recommends updates to enhance the accounting software.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills / Abilities :
- Extensive knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting in a non-profit setting.
- Understanding of and ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
- Highly proficient with accounting software with a preference for QuickBooks Online.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Education and Experience :
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline required.
- Minimum of five years of accounting experience required, preferably in a non-profit setting.
Physical Requirements :
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
