Police Officer
The purpose of this job is to manage the daily operations of assigned division, supervise an assigned shift of officers and detectives, protect life and property, deter criminal activity, conduct investigations and enforce all local, state and federal statues, ordinances, laws and regulations. This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks :
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Enforces all local and state codes, ordinances, laws and regulations to protect life and property and to prevent crime and promote security.
- Commands, manages, directs, participates, coordinates and motivates the enforcement activities of the assigned division.
- Provides Sergeants with information concerning department activities as received in staff or other meetings.
- Assists Captains with management decisions, including methods of operation and personnel staffing.
- Conducts investigations of complaints concerning possible violations of department rules and regulations by personnel; recommends appropriate action.
- Meets with representatives of other law enforcement agencies; communicates on matters of mutual concern; meets with state's attorney, court services, judges, police academy and other state training organizations, to plan for both the short- and long-term mutual interest.
- Reviews / corrects reports and documentation completed by assigned staff; ensures completion of all necessary reports; approves content of accident / incident reports; reviews / approves time sheets.
- Conducts other department administrative functions; implements and updates policies and procedures; responds to division correspondence; disseminates information regarding new laws and legislation.
- At times, conducts command functions at major accidents, emergencies, and disasters : assesses and contains scene; assigns personnel; delegates responsibilities; coordinates with other divisions or agencies.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; conducts driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day / night hours, in congested traffic, in adverse weather conditions, and in emergency situations involving speeds more than posted limits.
- Maintains records, logs, and files of work activities; maintains current manuals, policies / procedures, bulletins, map books, and other materials for reference and / or review.
- Responds to complaints and questions related to law enforcement issues and activities; mediates disputes; provides information, research problems, and initiates problem resolution.
- Creates and maintains positive public relations with the general public; provides education and information to the public on laws, law enforcement, crime prevention, drug abuse, and related issues.
- Conducts and attends meetings, training sessions and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal / civil case law; reads professional literature.
- Processes a variety of documentation associated with department / division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation, including timesheets, department rules and regulations, general orders, financial documentation, investigative files, incident reports and performance appraisals; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including department policies, general orders, investigative files, incident reports, performance appraisals, and financial documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and / or hardcopy records.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Education and Experience & Special Requirements :
Requires Intermediate Certificate by the Law Enforcement Professional Certificate Program.
Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Requires an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field; supplemented by eight (8) years of experience in law enforcement to include lead or supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
