THE POSITION
The University of Washington Libraries invites applications for the position of Associate Dean of UW Tacoma Library. This is an exceptional opportunity to help shape major programs, strategic directions, and service initiatives at one of the nation’s premier academic libraries.
Reporting through Workday to the Dean of Libraries, the Associate Dean is responsible for strategic visioning, policy and program development, operations and personnel, and overall innovation and excellence in the UW Tacoma Library.
- The Associate Dean provides leadership for transformational and user-centered services; integrated educational and curricular programs;
- staff development; an inclusive environment prioritizing equity and diversity; responsive collections and information resources;
assessment; and marketing of services. The Associate Dean works closely with the EVCAA and other UW Tacoma administrative teams to accomplish these responsibilities and foster effective cross-campus communication.
This position is primarily in-person and may be eligible for limited hybrid work.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Collaborate with UW Tacoma leadership in developing Library and campus-level strategic initiatives.
- Ensure quality programs, services, and collections; contribute to the ongoing stewardship and strategic directions of the UW Libraries.
- Work collaboratively to develop and sustain the Learning Commons.
- Build equitable and inclusive programs, services, and spaces.
- Foster collaborative attitudes and represent both the University Libraries and the UW Tacoma Library.
- Assess UW Tacoma Library services to ensure they meet institutional needs.
- Oversee a complex cost-effective library budget.
- Provide for continual skills and professional development of Library staff.
- Identify and develop resources to support programs enhancing the excellence of the UW Tacoma Library.
RANK
Position will be at rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian, depending on qualifications and background.
BENEFITS
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (UWRP) or the state’s Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3.
This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year.
SALARY
The base salary range for this position will be $10,000 to $11,750 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
ANTICIPATED START DATE
While we hope to fill the position in Winter Quarter 2025, we are happy to work with the successful candidate to explore opportunities for an earlier or later start date.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
- At least five years of successful library experience including leadership in an academic library setting.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings.
- Understanding of the roles of libraries in higher education and the community.
- Ability to work successfully in a collaborative management environment.
- Commitment to organizational and staff development.
- Knowledge of current and future issues for enhancing libraries' roles.
- Commitment to supporting student success and engagement.
- Experience managing significant budgets.
- Ability to advocate with superior communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred
- Experience managing unionized staff.
- Experience in planning, construction, or renovation of libraries.
- Familiarity with service assessment.
- Understanding of grants, fundraising, and donor relations.
- Record of research, publication, and professional contributions.
