S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. NRL is the Department of the Navy s corporate laboratory and reports to the Chief of Naval Research.

As the Navy's corporate laboratory, NRL is the principal in-house component in the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) effort to meet its science and technology responsibilities.

The Acoustics Division conducts basic and applied research addressing the physics of acoustic signal generation, propagation, scatter, and detection with the objective of improving the strategic and tactical capabilities of the Navy and Marine Corps in the ocean and land operational environment.

Opportunities available at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC, within the Acoustics Division to support basic and applied research that involves the capture of environmental carbon, hydrogen production and storage, and the production of fuels and materials by thermochemical, electrochemical, and plasma processes.

Responsibilities :

  • The candidate will be expected to have the skills to support at least one or some of the following program elements provided :
  • The design and evaluation of chemical systems (systems include, but not limited to electrochemical, thermochemical, and plasma) for hydrogenation of CO2 to syngas.
  • The design and evaluation of stable catalyst materials capable of catalyzing CO2 derived intermediates to aromatics products
  • Perform catalyst synthesis, analytical characterization of catalyst, and catalyst efficiency.
  • Direct air capture of CO2
  • Direct ocean capture of CO2
  • Computational modeling of catalyst environments to elucidate mechanistic pathways and guide experimental design.
  • Computational modeling that includes fluid dynamics, transport of ionic species, and reaction intermediates to guide experimental design of electrochemical systems.
  • Experience in engineering design, fabrication, and evaluation of systems and utilization of CAD programs.
  • Experience with scaling, integration, and automation of complex system components.

Clearance Required :

Secret Clearance or Interim Secret

Minimum Education :

  • The candidate must have a PhD, ideally in in one of the following areas : chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biomechanical engineering, or material science.
