POSITIONSUMMARY
The Clinical UnitSupevisor is a skilled and experienced professional RegisteredNurse (RN) responsible for excellence in the clinical practice ofnursing and the management of Medical-Surgical and TelemetryNurisng care patient care.
Reporting to the Nurse Manager ofMedical Surgical Nursing, the Clinical Unit Supervisor has 12 houraccountability for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating,and providing high quality, individualized patient / family centeredcare based on the Watson Model of Care, including theidentification and demonstration of abilities to meet special needsand considerations of Age and Population Specific awareness.
TheClinical Unit Supervisor will promote the maximum growth anddevelopment of the employees and assure patient advocacy under thedirection of the Nurse Manager and Director for Medical SurgicalNursing.
This position requires the full understanding and activeparticipation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Community Hospital. It is expected that the employee willdemonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employeeshall support Martin Luther King, Jr.
Community Hospital'sstrategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality andperformance improvement process activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-OpeningResponsibilities
- AttendSuper User training for the Care CollaborativeSystem.
- Participate in integrated testing forthe Care Collaborative System.
- Assist in theCare Collaborative Systen training for newemployees.
- Assist with unit set-up ofequipment, supplies, patient rooms, etc.
- Assistwith unit orientation of new employees.
- Assistwith creating useful "How To" handouts for the Care CollaborativeSystem.
- Any other duties as assigned by theNurse Manager to assure the unit is ready for the hospitalopening.
Post-OpeningResponsibilities
- Demonstratespositive interpersonal relationships while acting as the primaryliaison to Medical Staff and otherpersonnel.
- Demonstrates teamwork andcollaboration with Care Management when facilitating the admission,transfer and discharge of patients.
- Anticipatesstaffing needs and moves proactively to respond tothem.
- Assumes shift accountability by settingmeasurable goals and objectives so that sensitive, caring, optimumquality, and cost effective care is delivered in an environment ofcompassion, and respect through effective and efficient teamworkand rounding.
- Assigns patient beds based uponpatient condition, physician orders, unit capacity, and availablestaffing.
- Determines appropriate assignments ofunit personnel on each shift, by considering each employee'sskills, abilities, competencies, experiences and expertise, givensuch factors as staffing ratio, patient census, acuity level,complexity of treatment and languageneeds.
- Assigns break times for each employeeand relieves each licensed personnel for breaks in compliance withTitle 22 regulations.
- Delivers direct patientcare at times in response to the needs of the unit in accordancewith the duties and responsibilities of a staff RegisteredNurse.
- Maintains a safe and clean environmentthat complies with regulatory standards including Patient SafetyGoals.
- Maintains a positive work environment,acts as a good role model for the staff and promotes serviceexcellence that will maintain / improve customersatisfaction.
- Actively resolves complaintsand / or conflicts involving patients, patients' visitors / familiesand physicians.
- Assists in the interviewprocess of applicants for unit positions and makes recommendationsto the Nurse Manager. Ensure that all new hires have competency andorientation packet completed within 90 days from startdate.
- Contributes to the counseling process asdirected by the Nurse Manager.
- Assist with theperformance evaluation of employees and make recommendations asneeded.
- Assists Nurse Manager in reviewingpayroll in Kronos time for employees, including enteringcorrections as needed.
- Responsible fornotifying Administration, Nurse Manager, House Supervisor and RiskManager of risk events and follow up asappropriate.
- Participates in the implementationof the unit specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan,completes monitoring forms and reports findings to the NurseManager.
- Maintains intimate knowledge ofMedical Surgical and Telemetry policies and procedures and acts asa resource for the RN's on the units.
- AssitsUnit Manger with Electronic schedule by balancing schedule perprotocol.
POSITIONREQUIREMENTS
A.Education
Bachelor ofSciences degree in nursing (individuals hired without a BSN will berequired to complete a degree program within 5 years of their hiredate)
B.Qualifications / Experience
Minimumof three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in Medical / Surgical / Telemetry nursing with regard to regulatory guidelinesand standard of practice;
minimum one (1) year of Clinical UnitSupervisor experience. Internal candidates will be considered atmanagements discretion.
- Current CaliforniaNursing license
- Certification in Medical / Surgical Nursing preferred.
- Basic EKGCompetence
C. SpecialSkills / Knowledge
- Bilingualskills preferred (Spanish)
- Basic computerskills
- Current Basic Life Support(BLS)
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support(ACLS)
- Experience with Electronic MedicalRecord preferred
