At HoustonMethodist the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) position is responsiblefor functioning as novice to competent and demonstrates basicknowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately andcarry out delegated nursing assistant level tasks for assignedagespecific diverse patient population assisting in the delivery ofpatient care and services under the supervision of a licensednurse.
This position conducts hourly rounding to ensure patientneeds are met and records data established by policy and procedureand reports observations and patient problems to the licensednurse.
The PCA position performs basic patient care activities ofdaily living (ADLs) within unitspecific defined limits and jobscope such as assistance with patient elimination hygiene comfortsafety nutrition and progress activity and practices Patient andFamily Centered Care in concert with Houston Methodist ICAREvalues.

SERVICEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
Follows thepatient and familycentered care standards and provides directpatient care under the direction of a registered nurse.
Documentswhere applicable care administered diagnostic measurementstreatments and procedures in accordance with established policiesand procedures and cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
Responds to the call light system contacting nursing personnel asappropriate and follows through with meeting patientneeds.
Assists withmaintaining cleaning and stocking of equipment and supplies asestablished on assigned unit. May serve as an inhouse courier whichmay include retrieving blood hand delivering labs tele boxes etc.
Organizes the workflow problemsolves basic and routine matters andmanages multiple ongoing priorities seeking guidance and assistancefrom preceptor licensed nurse ormanagement.
Contributestowards improving department scores for patient satisfactionthrough peertopeer accountability i.e. bedside shifthandoff / report.
QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Reportsobservations conditions and problems of patients to licensedpersonnel to achieve desired patient outcomes. Provides for theprivacy of patients and families keeping the safety of the patientin mind.
- Providesappropriate handoff at change of shift at patient bedside tocommunicate and collaborate promoting patientcenteredcare.
- Conducts hourlyrounding to ensure patient needs are met (four Ps). Reports nearmisses and collaborates with the interprofessional health care teamto improve patientsafety.
- Contributestowards improving quality and safety scores through peertopeeraccountability. Supports initiatives to prevent conditions such aspressure injuries patient falls and hospitalacquiredinfections.
FINANCEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Assists withpatient and staffing needs (floats) across the service line orhospital as competencies allow. Utilizes time between heavyworkloadsefficiently.
- Utilizesresources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind.Selfmotivated to independently manage time effectively andprioritize daily tasks minimizing incidental overtime assistingcoworkers asneeded.
GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Offersinnovative solutions in performance improvement projects and sharedgovernanceactivities.
- Seeksopportunities to identify selfdevelopment needs on knowledge baseskill level and decisionmaking as necessary especially in areas ofquestion from preceptor and assigned licensed personnel and takesappropriate action.
Ensures own career discussions occur withappropriate management. Completes and updates the My DevelopmentPlan on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION
HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
WORKEXPERIENCE
- Mustcomplete one of the following :
- PCAexternship
- PCA internalinternship
- Six months of direct patient careexperience
- Enrolled in a school of nursingprogram with a completed first clinicalrotation
LICENSESAND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED
- BLS Basic LifeSupport (AHA) AND
- CNA CertifiedNursing Assistant State Licensure For Skilled NursingFacility(SNF) / Rehab departmentsonly
KNOWLEDGE SKILLSANDABILITIES
- Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
