Advertised Job Summary :

The Office of Access, Civil Rights, and Community Engagement is excited to announce the opening of the Executive Director of Community Engagement position.

Propelling the University of South Carolina toward deeper, more reciprocal and impactful community engagement, the Executive Director of Community Engagement (EDCE) is charged with building the University’s capacity to facilitate, elevate, and celebrate community-engaged work that expressly contributes to the public good.

Leading the University’s Office of Community Engagement, within the Division of Access, Civil Rights, and Community Engagement, the EDCE is responsible for creating a vision, mission, and values that guide the development and execution of strategic initiatives involving campus members across colleges, schools, and departments and community partners.

Fostering relationships through the communication of the university’s strategic goals, objectives, and programs, the EDCE will organize and lead an infrastructure that facilitates community engagement, develops partnerships to effectively advance community transformation, and identifies target areas to maximize the university’s social impact.

The Office of Community Engagement is expected to navigate multiple priorities, dynamic stakeholder groups, and the complexities inherent in collaboration to build organizational capacities that align with the University’s existing and planned campus programs and initiatives.

As the leader of this office, the EDCE serves as a key University liaison to individuals, K-12 schools, community organizations, and businesses within the greater Columbia area.

As head of the Office for Community and Engagement, the Executive Director is responsible for developing and implementing the Office’s goals and objectives and overseeing its fiscal, reporting, and personnel administration.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience :

Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of experience, including some prior management experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

Master’s degree in communications, public relations, social work, education or a related field; 5 or more years’ experience in community or government relations, public affairs, education, strategic communication, or related field, including three years in a supervisory or leadership role.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

  • Knowledge of transformational practices that empower students, staff, and faculty to address contemporary community needs
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating meaningful collaborative relationships with diverse populations (including individuals who are first-generation and / or come from underrepresented groups) and diverse organizations
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills supporting key relationships with stakeholders, both internal and external.

Must be willing to serve as a University spokesperson.

  • Ability to manage complex programs and initiatives involving multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to clearly define partnership goals, identify effective processes, and assess outcomes
  • Ability to use evidence (data, research, etc.) to inform decision-making
