SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of the school site Principal and / or the Washoe County School District Department of Family-School Partnerships, the Family Graduation Advocate Liaison I will provide services to families of WCSD students to monitor their child's academic progress, access support services, effectively communicate with teachers and other school staff in order to support students to remain on the pathway to graduation.

If assigned to English Learners' (ELs) Family Liaison :

Under general direction of the Director the Family Liaison plans, develops, coordinates, implements and is responsible for various functions related to providing programs and services directly for parent(s) / guardian(s) of English Learners.

These programs and services enable parents and guardians to further support the education of their children. Through targeted language based programs, parents develop literacy skills to enhance communication between home and school.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITES

  • Assists school-site and district office personnel in supporting high school families to navigate the system and monitor their child's academic progress in order to keep students on the path to graduation, focuses and outreaches to the families of students who show early warning signs of not graduating from high school, works with school administration and counselors to identify targeted families for support, works in partnership with counselors to empower families to support their child's academic achievement by setting high expectations at home and understanding their child's progress with grades, credit attainment and attendance;
  • empowers families to monitor their child's grades, attendance and assessments by utilizing the web-based parent portal, enters and monitors data on academic supports provided to families as tracked in the student information system;
  • works with school leadership including administration, teachers and counselors to provide individualized support of families and when applicable helps to implement the family engagement portion of the Academic Personalized Plan, may participate in various advisory group meetings and school committees such as Professional Learning Communities or Academic Leadership Teams acts as liaison between the school, home and community to promote academic support of students and enhance communication between staff, families and the community;
  • connects families to district and community resources; serves as a cultural broker to help families from various cultural backgrounds to navigate the educational system;
  • participates in ongoing evaluation efforts of both school and district family engagement initiatives; may serve as an interpreter and / or translator when requested;
  • may serve as an active member of the School Improvement (SIP) Team and recruits and supports families to serve on the SIP Team;
  • may conduct home visits relative to family engagement and other means of outreach to hard to reach families; assists in facilitating parent education workshops as they relate to a child's academic progress;
  • works with students to let them know of the resources available to their families at the school and build academic partnerships between the students, families and school site staff;

solicits the participation of the local business community in identifying and developing programs; collaborates with other key district personnel on family engagement such as staff from : Team Up-21st Century, FACE Liaisons, Title III, Title VII and early childhood education when applicable.

Methods of communication with families may include, but not limited to making and distributing posters and flyers, surveys, direct contact, Connect Ed messaging, updating social media sites, and posting on school's web site.

If assigned to English Learners' (Els) Family Liaison : Family Liaison will serve as a contact, as well as an outreach for parents of English Learners.

The position requires building relationships with other WCSD departments (family engagement, counseling, EL Social Worker), school sites, and local community partners and work collaboratively to provide resources to our second language families.

The Family Liaison will provide training that may be needed for parents, as well as inform parents of classes, workshops or informational meetings that will assist second language parents in their ability to better understand the curriculum and support their students need in their educational pursuits.

Family Liaison will arrange, as needed, home and community visits and have an understanding of parents' rights.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education / Experience : Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be :

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience is desirable.
  • Two years of experience with students or families in school, or community agencies. Bilingual is preferred, but not required.
  • If assigned to English Learners' (Els) Family Liaison : In addition to 1 & 2 above being biliterate in both English and Spanish (preferred).

Knowledge of : School and district organizational structure and functioning; District and community resources as related to the position.

If assigned to English Learners' (Els) Family Liaison : Knowledge of : Basic parenting skills, school and District organizational structure.

Basic understanding of cultural norms and how to provide parent support for schools / district and community. A Family Liaison has the ability to speak in public.

An understanding of curriculum, standards, programs, and initiatives that are implemented across the district. An ability to organize meetings or workshops based on the needs of parents / guardians.

  • Skilled at : Communicating effectively with families, education personnel and various agencies and programs; recognizing and appreciating cultural differences, and maintaining respect for different cultural backgrounds;
  • maintaining confidentiality of information; interpreting and explaining district policies and procedures as they relate to the position;

preparing and giving accurate written and / or oral reports, and reviewing and interpreting the reports of others; maintaining constructive relationships with those contacted at work.

If assigned to English Learners' (Els) Family Liaison : In addition to the Skills noted above : Skills that show Technology experience that includes, but not limited to Excel, Word, Outlook, and email.

Licenses / Certificates : None Required.

If assigned to English Learners' (Els) Family Liaison, in addition to the Licenses / Certificates above, must have access to own transportation.

Special Considerations : Must be willing and able to work a varied schedule.
