Job Summary :
Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern II assists with the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of nursing care for an identified group of patients.
Works under the Nurse Manager's license of the assigned unit, and is paired with RNs during their assigned shift. The Nurse Extern II is a nursing student, a graduate awaiting his / her temporary permit from the state of Wisconsin or awaiting to retake the NCLEX exam. Other duties assigned.
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION :
Required minimum experience of either :
A) two acute care medical-surgical clinical rotations.
B) one medical-surgical clinical rotation and one clinical rotation pertinent to the clinical area applying for.
In addition, at least one of the clinical rotations must have included medication administration. Nursing clinicals must have provided theory, knowledge and experience in providing patient care, performing patient care procedures and techniques, as well as knowledge and experience in performing physical assessments, gathering of history data, development of nursing care plans and medical record documentation.
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION :
Education requirements are either :
- 1) currently enrolled in last year of an accredited School of Nursing;
- 2) a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and waiting his / her temporary license and expected to take initial exam within 60 days of graduation;
3) awaiting to retake the NCLEX exam. If unable to pass NCLEX may retain position for up to 6 months post-graduation.
SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION :
Ability to read, write, understand, perform simple arithmetic, and follow directions related to basic patient care. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, visitors, and physicians in a courteous manor.
Ability to complete simple comparisons between numbers. Ability to show experience in essential functions. Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail when performing basic patient care tasks.
Ability to walk and stand and to lift and position patients.
LICENSURE DESCRIPTION :
State of Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) is preferred except for in CHD where it is required. In CHD, in lieu of CNA certification, must provide documentation from an accredited school for professional nurses indicating successful completion of the basic nursing course which encompass all of the criteria noted by the State of Wisconsin administrative code.
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire.
